Sunset in a harbor with sailboats

The warmth of summer has once again taken up residence in our part of the world. After endless days of gray skies, we’re being treated to the warmth of sunlight on our face and shoulders. The tightness in our body feels a little looser. And in the cool of the evening everything seems just a bit lighter, right?

We all seem to have a different idea about our “happy place.” But one person’s day at the beach is another person’s, “Too darn hot.” If we cling too tightly to that one ideal time and place with perfect conditions that live up to our dream, most of the time we find ourselves somewhere else. And we miss the beauty of this moment.

Here’s an old story that speaks to this:

Tung-shan’s “No Cold or Hot”

Blue Cliff Record, Case #43

A monk asked Zen Master Tung-shan, “When cold and hot come, how can we avoid them?”

“Why don’t you go to the place where there is no cold or hot?” replied Tung-shan.

The monk asked, “Where is the place where there is no cold or hot?”

Tung-shan said, “When cold comes, cold kills you; when hot comes, hot kills you.”

May you find the place where there is no cold or hot.

Chanting Requests

Once a month, we set aside time in our Sunday practice to express compassion for anyone who is suffering or recently deceased. Kwan Seum Bosal chanting is for anyone who is suffering. Ji Jang Bosal chanting is for the recently deceased. We invite you to register the names of loved ones for either chant. We will recite the names when we do special chanting.
