June is Bustin' Out All Over
|
|
There's a song in that...
In all, we have entered the best time of year to celebrate anything and everything outdoors. Apply some sunscreen and get outside by visiting Oregon Farm Loop farms, farm stands, farmers' markets, vineyards, and wineries. This is great weather for hikes and photo walks before the summer heat arrives. Try something new or revisit place you've visited before, and maybe bring a new friend or family along!

Speaking of weather, our Spring started a little chilly. That means some of the farm stops got a slightly later start that some years...and thus are still open for some of their seasonal events.

We have updated our five websites to include an Events calendar on each site. We update the events as we learn about them. No guarantees that events won't be sold out. They're open when we post them. Visit early and often! Click a Farm Loop logo to see the Events calendar for that site, or check out all of the events at all of the Farm Loops by clicking the Oregon Farm Loop logo.
Father's Day is Sunday, June 18th, and there are plenty of activities to help you celebrate Dad on the Farm Loops all weekend! Check websites or contact the farm stops for ticket information. Also, keep an eye on our Events pages to see if any more have been added!

We love recommendations! Do you know of a farm-related business (or an actual farm) that may be a good match for any of our Oregon Farm Loops?
|
|
Early? Late? On time? Many varieties of strawberries are finishing early in June. Soon cherries, blueberries, raspberries and lavender will arrive. This late spring followed by warm dry weather means every crop has a mind of its own this year.
We urge you to definitely CALL FIRST before heading to your favorite Farm Loop producer.
We always try to offer more information in our newsletters and websites, but our farmers are our best up-to-the-minute source.
Contact information is available on our individual Farm Loop websites (except Sunset: we're still working on that one.) Start at www.oregonfarmloop.com and consult the Farm Stops pages. Or check out the printable brochures, also available on each site! (Or just scroll down a bit to link directly to them!)

It's time for blueberries, boysenberries, raspberries, and strawberries!
According to the Oregon Strawberry Commission (OSC), Oregon strawberries that are grown on local farms and picked at the peak of ripeness are the luscious crown jewels of the Oregon summer.
- Albion - available from late May through the summer months
- Hood - available for only 2-3 weeks at the beginning of strawberry season
- Shuksan - typically available early in the berry season, late May and early June
- Seascape - these berries ripen throughout the growing season from late May to September
- Mary's Peak - June bearing but ripen later than other popular varietals, often available at the beginning of July

Where to get fresh berries on the Farm Loop
|
|
These are the farm stops along the Farm Loops that offer fresh berries, berry plants, and berry products. You'll be happy contacting them first to ensure that they're open and the berries are available. Extended Winter weather during early Spring affected the plants' awakening. Some of the stops open in July, but we're talking about berries this month!

Fun Fact: Cherries are considered drupes, not berries. They're more closely related to peaches and nectarines. Here's an article with this and other details about cherries!

Farmers want you to enjoy the food they grow! We found a few sites where you can get recipes to help you get the most from your Oregon berries and other farm-fresh produce.
