MONDAY MEMO
4th grader Ellie, 6th grader Willa, and 7th grader Noelle showed off the antique bottles they found and washed in the stream while doing a major clean up effort in service to Siskin Coutts at the end of our Fall Field Trip experience.
Greetings!

With so many start-of-the year, community-building traditions behind us, it feels like we are now really in the swing of things. Come along on the ride!

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES
GRANDPARENTS & THE MONDAY MEMO
It's definitely our intention to share the Monday Memo directly with grandparents and loved ones that families listed on their pink bio forms. For those who were part of Riverside last year, that's mostly already happening. Now that forms are in and the field trip is over, Nelia hopes to get to updating that list this week and including all grandparents/loved ones next week. Thanks for your patience, and in the meantime feel free to forward the Memo!
SCHOOL PICTURE
Whipples school picture order envelopes are going home today. Please return the envelope before picture day, which is Friday, October 13 . If you don't want pictures please indicate that on the envelope and return to school anyway.
PARENT ADVISORY GROUP MEETING
The PAG will have its first meeting this Wednesday at 5:00 in the kitchen. All interested parents are welcome to attend! The agenda will be introductions and goals; the start of the year; fundraising calendar; teaching of the mission, parenting book/podcast club.
RACE BACK TO SCHOOL
This Thursday afternoon, between 3:30-7:00 pm, we hope to see you out on Kingdom Trails! Don't worry, you don't have to commit to staying the whole timeChoose if you want to walk, run, or ride. Choose your laps and fun stations. Choose when you're done.

In advance, seek pledges from friends, family, and neighbors. Dollars per lap? Dollars per point? Dollars per hour? A total gift for meeting a goal? Funds raised by your pledges will go directly to Riverside's growing scholarship/tuition assistance program. If you don't want to hit the trails yourself, pledge to support someone else!

More details about Race Back to School are in the Event Guide here.
RIVERSIDE SOCCER
Practices: Sean is considering optional practices on Wednesday afternoons for 5-8th grade students who don't play on any other teams besides Riverside. He'd love to have some parents join in the scrimmaging fun. Stay tuned for updates.

5-6th Proposed Schedule: If we can't find a parent volunteer by the end of this week to run the games (assign positions, manage substitutions, and help players reflect on the game at half time and end), we will probably have to cancel the season for this group. Please reach out to Sean if you are interested in helping out.

3-5th GRADE SWIMMING
3-5th grade won't swim again until September 29, and then October 13, 20, and 27. Please remember to pick up on those dates at the college at 3:15.
EAST BURKE FALL FEST AND PARADE
We are looking for a couple of parents to coordinate our participation in the East Burke Fall Festival Parade on September 30. That would involve finding a truck and wagon, planning decorations and candy to toss, being on point to meet families who choose to participate, and then returning all borrowed items after the event. We ask students/families to meet at 9:45 am at the park just north of East Burke village and we are usually done walking by 11:00 am. Please let Nelia know if you can help coordinate.
YARD SALE
Riverside's Annual Yard Sale will be Saturday, October 7. This is a well known event in the broader community, organized by Riverside parents, that raises needed funds for our programs here at school.

Volunteers: We need you! In anticipation of a successful Yard Sale, our goal is that most parents will volunteer to work a shift or two for the event: at a donation drop off time above, setting up on Friday, October 6, or managing or cleaning up the sale on Saturday, October 7, or putting our campus back together on Sunday, October 8. Thank you in advance for any help you can give. You can sign up to volunteer here.

Donations: We hope you are cleaning out your attics, basements, cupboards and closets to donate items. Here is some guidance for donations:
  • We CAN take: linens, books, toys, sports gear, shoes, bags, yard stuff, artwork, office, housewares, antiques, jewelry, tools, pet supplies, holiday decor & crafts, and clothing. Clothing should be washed, wearable, and pre-sorted by size and youth vs mens vs womens; please no tears/rips/stains/broken zippers. We ask that each family limit their daily-wear clothing donations to 2 kitchen-sized trash bags (roughly 13 gal size)
  • We CANNOT take: electronics, particle board furniture, magazines, video or audio cassettes, encyclopedias, car seats
All donations must be brought before noon on the Friday, October 6. Presorting your donations into the categories above is essential to supporting the volunteers who will also be sorting and setting up the sale. Please help us all by doing that at home, or when you bring your donations. Volunteers will be on campus to help accept donations on:
  • Sunday, Oct 1: 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
  • Monday-Thursday, Oct 2-5: 2:45 - 4:00 pm
  • Friday, Oct 6: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Thank you to those parents leading this event! Carrie Stahler - advertising (6th grader Victor and alum Moxie), Nelia Rath - volunteers (2nd grader Cora), Anna Crytzer - donations (6th grader Fiona), Claudia Lechuga - set up and sale (kindergartener Lazlo, 2nd grader Weldon, 5th grader Eula) and Arcelie Newell - food (2nd grader Cassius, 6th grader Phoenix, alum Kingston).
COUNSELOR ELLEN
Licensed mental health counselor Ellen Moore will be on campus on Tuesdays. Ellen is available situationally for emergent counseling needs, but for regular meetings or to have your child join her regular caseload, you should reach out to her about next steps.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE DRILL
We will have a practice lockdown-style drill on Tuesday, September 26 at 9:15. Over the last several years, we have developed a detailed emergency response plan that is developmentally appropriate and aligned with our mission. This drill is part of that initiative. Additionally, we must complete two state-mandated “multiple response” drills each year.
CLUBS
  • 3-5th Grade Crazy 8's Math Club has its maximum number of students already signed up. We will have our first meeting on Monday, 9/25 and these are the following dates for this season: 9/25, 10/2, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13. On these Mondays, students who've signed up for the Crazy 8's club will go to after school care with Sean until Caroline checks them into Crazy 8's at 3:30. The club will start with a snack together before the fun begins. Pick up is at 4:30 in front of the barn. If you have any questions please email Caroline for more information.
  • 6-8th Latin Club will be Wednesdays after school from 3:35 until 4:30. The focus of meetings between now and November will be entirely on certamen practice for the Yale Invitational Certamen, which is on Saturday, November 11th and will involve an overnight trip.
CATALOGUE FUNDRAISERS
Our parent community is striving to reach their $25,000 fundraising goal, which helps to bridge the gap between tuition and program expenses. (Next month you'll start to hear about the Annual Fund appeal, which also helps.)

This year we are planning multiple catalogue-sale-style fundraisers with the following companies (along with additional in-person events). The variety of campaigns is meant to provide a selection for our growing school community and networks. Maybe you’re not into labels, but your cousin has little kids in daycare who could use them; or maybe you’re not into gardening but you have a neighbor who orders flowers or veggie seeds in bulk each year; or maybe you’re into more active efforts, like the Race Back to School…ideally, there’s something for everyone. Please forward links to friends and neighbors who might be interested!
PROPHYLACTICS
Following Vermont State Law, we have made a variety of prophylactics available to students. They are in the bathrooms that are upstairs in the house, with the products for those who menstruate.
NORTH COUNTRY CHORUS
The North Country Youth Chorus is seeking participants; their fall session begins next week on September 27. They meet on Wednesdays at 3:30 pm in St. Johnsbury. Members practice teamwork, concentration, and self confidence while learning about music and singing.
