Praise For Dave & Steph
Just a quick note to tell you how much I enjoyed the Dave Newhouse article about Steph Curry. With just the outlines of Curry’s background and current responsibilities, Newhouse gave me a vivid picture of this complex and gifted man. Many thanks to the writer and his gracious nod to his wife for the quote: "…for he’s a great American.”
How apropos for this Fourth of July holiday! (Sports Today, #544.)

Giants Honor
Their Own;
A's Strike Out
by Dave Newhouse
| |
I don’t need a fiddler on a roof to teach myself about tradition. I know the difference when I see it, and I see it — or not — with the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A's.
The Giants embrace tradition, the A’s eschew it, despite excellence in that regard, individually and collectively, on both sides of the Bay Bridge.
Statues are a wonderful visual sight when you have Hall of Famers galore in your team’s alumni list, which identifies both the Giants and A’s. So why is it that the Giants have five individual statues outside Oracle Park, while the A’s have zero statuary outside the Oakland Coliseum.
| |
The Giants thusly have honored five Cooperstown inductees — Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal, Orlando Cepeda and Gaylord Perry — while the A’s have celebrated their Hall of Famers — Reggie Jackson, Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley and Catfish Hunter plus Dave Stewart — with a can of paint.
The A’s painted the uniform numbers of Jackson, Fingers, Eckersley, Henderson, Hunter and Stewart in the outfield bleachers at the Coliseum, while also paying tribute to Henderson, a true Oaklander, with a paint job behind home plate.
It’s all temporary, of course, because the A’s are leaving town this fall and taking all those numbers with them, to be repainted in Sacramento and Las Vegas, if the franchise gets that far. John Fisher, it’s clear, isn’t the Michelangelo of Major League Baseball.
| |
But it’s a shame regardless how regally the Giants have honored their legends, while the A’s have treated theirs with utter disregard. If that famous musical fiddler was fiddling about baseball tradition locally, it would be on the Giants side of the bridge.
Yes, the A’s are leaving town, but that’s no reason to show disrespect from their various owners -- Steve Schott and Ken Hofmann down to Lew Wolff and next to Fisher. Well, all four had wanted to take their franchise elsewhere, and Fisher succeeded, we think. For many of us, we’ll believe the A’s are gone when we see it, and it’s not yet visible.
However, the Giants have had ownership changes, too, not to mention aborted moves to Canada and Florida, and that hasn’t stopped them from erecting statues, though Barry Bonds hasn’t happened….yet.
The fiddler has put down his fiddle on this one.
| |
Willie McCovey
If Fisher decides to erect statues in Sacramento or Las Vegas, he should be chastised harshly hereabouts. How low can you go? Hijacking a respected franchise is one thing, but honoring players in places where they didn’t play is so minor league.
Minor league is another way of saying bush, which Fisher is all about. Start playing fiddler, tradition is dead in Oakland.
In another form of tradition, it would be impossible to separate Yosh Uchida from San Jose State University, because, together, they made quite a team in the sport of judo.
Judo gets little attention on the sports page, but Uchida carved a deep impression over eight decades as SJSU judo coach, winning more than 40 national championships while training 22 future Olympians. He became the school’s judo coach in 1940 when he enrolled at the college. After four years in the Army during World War II, he returned to SJSU to earn a degree in biological services. He then emerged as the school’s most successful coach in any sport, while also becoming a millionaire by owning medical testing laboratories.
| |
Yosh in his Uchida Enterprises office in downtown San Jose
I graduated from SJSU in 1964 after meeting and writing about Uchida. He had a stoic presence in moving about his judoists in practice, mostly observing and occasionally offering cogent advice. I attended a dinner that same year honoring Uchida as the United States' first Olympic judo coach before the Summer Games in Tokyo, and writing about that achievement as well in the Oakland Tribune.
I hadn’t seen Uchida in years after that, but when he turned 100, I was able to send him a congratulatory note, and I received a kind note in return.
Yoshihiro “Yosh” Uchida passed away this month at 104. A black belt tightened around the sport over this momentous loss.

The Sportsmanteau
by Robert Moselle, Esq.
"A portmanteau is a word that results from blending two or more words, or parts of words, such that the portmanteau word expresses some combination of the meaning of its parts," (Britannica), (e.g.,
internet, labradoodle, brunch).
Sports Today now introduces its own portmanteau, the Sportsmanteau, which combines "Sports" with, of course, "Portmanteau." Below are two Sportsmanteaus, spiced up with a little Nickname Confusion.
Earlier this season as I watched Giants games, there was a constant reference to a "Bomel." Bomel called the shots and had to either be a computer or the Manager. Yes, Bomel was Manager BOb MELvin, a nifty Sportsmanteau. Watch BOMEL get ejected after an umpire made a call on a potential strikeout:
| |
BOMEL managed the Oakland Athletics from 2011–21, and by the end of his tenure, his 853 wins were second-most in team history, behind only Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack, and his 1,346 wins ranked 34th in MLB history. ESPN reported: "With the A's, Melvin developed a reputation as a players' manager as well as a keen strategist, and in a division in which his team often carried the lowest payroll, he found consistent success." On October 25, 2023, the San Francisco Giants announced that BOMEL had been hired as the club's manager, the 39th manager in franchise history. He signed a three-year contract.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Melvin
He has continued his wizardry with the G-Men, who have been hammered by injuries but who, with the addition of previously unknown players and crafty utilization of pitchers, remain
in playoff contention.
* * *
| |
BOMEL, meet Sportsmanteau Number Two: BELMO, the Sportsmanteau used by fans of the world's greatest bowler, Jason BELMOnte. GQ Sports called him The Man Who Broke Bowling. BELMO has popularized a two-handed approach style to deliver his shot. Most of us have probably bowled at some time, but NOBODY bowls like BELMO. An Australian Pro on the PBA tour, BELMO has at least 27 career 300 games in PBA Tour events. He has won 31 PBA titles including a record 15 major championships; he is only one of eight bowlers in PBA tour history to achieve 30 wins, making him the only 30-time winner in PBA Tour history who is not currently a member of the PBA Hall of Fame (he has yet to meet the 20 years on Tour requirement). BELMO is one of two bowlers in PBA history to have won the Super Slam, winning all five PBA major titles.
In this YouTube clip, BELMO explains the basics of his revolutionary style:

The A's Are On My Mind
As of this writing, there are only 71 games remaining for the Oakland A's. Did you know 37 Hall of Famers have played for the A's franchise? I was going to ask a question about that but anything of interest would have been
too obscure or too obvious.
Rather than working hard at a question:
What MLB player played the most games in his career?
Answer below...

Klay Thompson -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee
I was a photographer for BodyArmor a few years ago and that got me access to several incredible athletes, including the Warriors Klay Thompson. During one of his appearances I brought a Warriors jersey and had him sign it and we took this photo right after. Klay was very friendly and approachable every time we met.

Something About Contracts And A Decent Respect For Players’ Privacy
by Howard Pearlstein
Not much to write about the NFL and NBA in off-season pre-season days: trades, cuts, drafts.
And a lot of made-up stuff in the fantasy range of, “Who do I want them to get (or get rid of)?”
“What could I skewer them over?” All of it attributed to “sources say.” And sometimes it’s a bit of axe-grinding from someone to help solidify his or her own position or destabilize another’s -- lateral elitism.
It’s not just politicians who make stuff up and claim so-called sources. Remembering dialogue I read in a mystery novel long ago: “Where did he get that information?” “I think he found it up his sleeve.” “A sleeve job, you say?” “I don’t know what that is, but maybe.”
So ok, it’s been really hot and us fat old guys get really cranky, but I have for a long time hated so-called news about the prices reported for sports contracts. Hell, it wasn’t until only a few years ago that team owners were forced legally to honor the documents called contracts, which had been no more than pieces of paper saying we like you and we’d like to do this…if we can, maybe.”
There must be players who would like some privacy, to spend their own money at their own discretion instead of opening up a flood of, “You’re making so much so...” Or worse, getting things like alimony or loan payments re-negotiated upwards along with the new contract.
Whether factual or not, contract details can stir up potential friction between players. Freedom of the press doesn’t mean players have to give up their privacy. Publishing their financial negotiations is rude and actually insulting.
The money is fictional anyway. $10 million becomes $4.9 million right off the top, as it goes to the first-dibs IRS. State taxes, agents, financial managers, two homes, and a lifetime career that’s going to last 5 or 10 or 15 years, after which, what? The current estimate for how much you need to retire (at 65) and continue to live here is $1.76 million. And when your career retires you at 35?
This is the same in many fields where doing what is required for an elite position and income often costs as much or more than it pays, because in addition to your work, you need to show off name brand accessories. Years ago a friend in the movie business told me he just “needed to get to firm financial footing.”
He’d made $600,000 the year before and I said: “Man, if you don’t have it, it doesn’t exist.” And he said, “You don’t understand. He (a client’s name) got matching mink coats for him and his wife, so I had to.” “But they live in New York and you live in Southern California.” He said: “Doesn’t matter, that’s the way it is.”
How much more so for NBA and NFL and MLB players because “the money they pay you says how good you are.” I don’t need to know that and it can actually harm the player’s career to publish it.
It makes me think about something Barry Goldwater said. He was a decent man with a sense of humor, a former Air Force general who regarded the Constitution as divinely inspired. In 1964 he was asked about a woman’s right to abortion. His answer, speaking as a US Senator: “Unless she’s having it in the middle of a federal highway, and impeding Interstate Commerce, IT’S NONE OF OUR GODDAMN BUSINESS.”
Same thing about players’ salaries: “None of our goddamn business.”

Vol. 87: Power 4 Conference Schools Need NIL Collectives To Raise Roughly $14 Million Annually To Compete
The Weekly Longer NIL Thought
by Darren Heitner
Founder of HEITNERLEGAL
This week, Opendorse released its "NIL at 3" report. For those who have been living under a rock, it was July 1, 2021 that the NCAA finally decided to modify its draconian rules to largely allow college athletes to partake in deals that monetize their names, images, and likenesses; hence, "NIL at 3."
Anyhow, Opendorse has been an important service provider in this space since July 1, 2021 and has worked with many NIL collectives, allowing it a certain level of access to data that it has been able to analyze for these annual reports. To be clear, this "NIL at 3" report is limited in nature given the fact that Opendorse does not work with all schools and also because not all deals are disclosed by college athletes.
That said, the report does provide an interesting glimpse into the college athlete dealmaking ecosystem and offers some general themes worthy of discussion. I highlight my main takeaways below.

San Jose shows grit to earn first clean sheet of season; Quakes’ homestand continues Saturday
vs. Sporting Kansas City
SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes defeated Chicago Fire FC 1-0 on Sunday night at PayPal Park to earn their first clean sheet of the season and snap a six-game losing streak as Ian Russell earned his first win as interim head coach.
After a scoreless first half, midfielder Hernán López got the Quakes on the board first when he hauled in a long pass from Cristian Espinoza and beat goalkeeper Chris Brady in the 49th minute. The visitors appeared to equalize in the 71st minute when Hugo Cuypers headed in a rebound off the crossbar, but video review called it back for offside. The Black and Blue put on a collective effort to close out the game defensively.

Roots Defeat League Leaders Louisville City FC 1-0 at Home
Oakland locked up defensively on Saturday night in the East Bay, as Roots handed visiting Louisville City FC just their third loss of the USL Championship season in a thrilling 1-0 victory.
Out of the gate, Lou City looked to be the more organized team, keeping their shape and moving the ball well upfield. But the Roots were adept at playing spoiler, maintaining the majority of possession through the first frame, and limiting the visitors ability to gather any momentum.
Louisville nearly scored on two separate occasions in the first half in which Roots left a man unmarked on the far post, but on both occasions an Oakland defender was able to get in front of the resulting shot and keep the match level heading into the half.
It looked to be more of the same entering the second half of play, with Louisville looking dangerous, but Roots holding steadfast.
