CRAB 38 Rally Rookie by Steve Long

The Porsche Club of America and more specifically our Sacramento Valley Region offers many fun activities. We have a strong group that Autocrosses and great Concours involvement (insert shameless plug for Concours, this Sunday June 4th at Porsche Rocklin). We offer Tours for those wanting to see new roads, meet with friends and enjoy food and libations. We have social events galore as well. During CRAB 38, we took in all of this and the challenge of another activity, our first TSD Rally. TSD means Time, Speed and Distance.  Think of a TSD Rally as a Tour where you sprinkle in some competition. If you are not aware of TSD Rallies, I will try to explain in my best rookie-ness.

TSD Rally goers follow a list of driving instructions along a route. Instructions can be ‘Keep Average Speed,’ ‘Pause’ here, ‘Turn’ after that sign and even ‘Starting’ a segment at the correct time matters. All of these play into the ‘game’ of the Rally.

Cars will have a driver and a navigator team. On that route, there are programmed ‘checkpoints’ which are not known to the participants. Teams are scored upon how close they adhere to the TSD instructions for that checkpoint, in seconds. The lower the number on that checkpoint the better. Checkpoints for scoring seem to be from twenty to forty, normally. The Team with the lowest overall score wins just like golf.  We utilize a smart phone app that knows all and gives you scores as you go along. I can tell you we had a couple of perfect ‘zero’ scores. That was pretty cool. I could officially cut and paste all of the details about the different competitive levels and equipment allowed per level and the like. It makes more sense when you are in the moment.

For CRAB 38, “Ralliers” met at Signature Wheel in West Sacramento. From there, were directed to the first point where timing was to begin off I-80 and Del Paso Road. Remember, “Starting” at your correct time DOES matter. The Rally took us along the Sacramento River, into the Town of Nicholas and around lovely farm country for about ninety miles. We ebbed and flowed with other competitors that interpreted the instructions differently than us. Some turned in different places than us. Others drove at different speeds, too slow or too fast. And some randomly drove the wrong direction thinking they missed something. All of this made for great fun watching each other and crossing paths. After the scoring portion of the Rally was done, we all converged back to the Sacramento Auto Museum to rejoin CRAB’s home base.

Even more fun and camaraderie is had when the Rally is over. I guarantee you will make a new friend at a Rally. Everyone seems to want to chat about confusing ‘Step 31’ or did you see THAT as ‘Step 11’. The debrief over Brats and Beers was as fun as the Rally itself.

We did learn that our 2010 Cayman’s speedometer was off about two miles-per-hour throughout the range. This also affects the odometer reading. These do affect your ability to score well. If you have not compared your speedo to an outside source like GPS or an Speed/Odometer App, I recommend you do.

I also recommend that you attend a Rally School. We are looking forward to our first at Porsche Parade after running a couple of Rallies. It will be fun to learn why we did all the things wrong that we did!
My wife and I were not sure what to expect at the CRAB Rally after Rich Wetzel talked us into it. It was a little confusing at first. After performing a few of the directions, it all comes together. My wife was the driver and I navigated. Don’t tell her I said this but, all the mistakes were mine. She drove like a champ!

Thank you to Rich Wetzel
Andy Stocker took care of Richta App, measurements, scoring, etc.
John Leet worked with the TV crew.

San Simeon Tour
By Mike & Emily Willis

Thanks to all who attended this years tour. We might have been a small group, but we were mighty. Just think how easy it was to mingle with everyone.

Out tour route was similar to past years with the exception of not being able to use Peach Tree Road due to various road conditions. It did however work out very well as we took another route to HWY 101 which proved to be even better.

We left early Friday morning and made a few stops before getting to our lunch stop at the Leal Winery in Hollister. Nice area for our picnic. After some tasting we headed out down HWY 25 for the Porsche part of the tour.

Our next stop was in Paso Robles at the Donati Family Vineyard where a cheese tray was waiting for us along with some very nice wines. We had the back room with conformable seating to sit back and enjoy the company.

After this we took off for San Simeon to check in and get ready for more socializing and a Pizza diner with our own choice of beverage. The tour was over at this point so everyone could do and see the area attractions.

This year we took the Julia Morgan 2 hour tour of the Castle. There are a number of new tours this year. Our small goup climbed a lot of stairs to be able see those areas not offered on any of the other tours.

We drove home on Sunday. Highway 1 is still closed due to last winter's deluge, so that route was not an option.

Again thanks to all who attended.
Mexican Fiesta
By Jim McMahen

At the planning meeting back in January, we had a crazy idea of hosting a spring SVR gathering at our home. With plenty of room for socializing and parking, we thought that a casual backdrop would be inviting and just what club members would enjoy. We also debated on whether to host a dinner in the evening or a lunch in the afternoon. Anticipating that folks coming to Newcastle might like a nice springtime drive, we opted for a lunchtime fiesta. We were correct in our thinking! There was an overwhelming response, with 66 sign-ups.

As people arrived, they were greeted by the colorful umbrellas shading our front lawn as well as cold beer and margaritas. It was fun to see that so many people drove their Porsches and we lined cars up on display. It was also great to reconnect with many friends who we hadn’t visited with in a while. Our aim was for a relaxing, casual time, and seeing smiles on faces.

As many people know, it is my wife, Linda, who works tirelessly when we host events. Unfortunately, she tested Covid positive and was unable to attend.

But with most of the arrangements completed early, the entire day went smoothly. Our caterer, Casa Ramos from Lincoln did an outstanding job with an abundance of tasty food. And everyone enjoyed the ice cream sundaes for dessert.

The whole event would not have been possible without the family and friends who pulled everything together. Our daughter, Maryann, along with her family Andrew, Valerie, and Alarik, were in charge of food and drinks. We are also truly blessed to have friends Cindy and Kent Brandon; Carol and Ira McKee; and Cathy Keegan all of whom help immensely.

And as the afternoon came to a close, it was everyone who helped in
making The Mexican Fiesta a success! Thank you.
CRAB 38 ROAD TOUR
By Rick Duste, SVR Tour Chair

WUNDERVOLL – an appropriate description for the day and CRAB 38’s Road Tour through the Delta and along the Sacramento River.

Over 120 drivers and guests assembled in Davis to begin the journey.  A strong representation from neighboring regions, especially Diablo Region, listened intently during the drivers briefing with the American and German flags providing the backdrop. Linda Duste and Lisa Menning did a stellar job in checking in the cars and assigning them to their groups.  Five groups headed south led by Tour Leaders Matt Menning, Dave Aronson, Kirk Bradford, Andy Simpkinson, and Howard Wolf aided by Sweeps Carlos Bocanegra, Michael Born, Stefan Hepper, Eric Kephart, and Frank Preisig.

For the first hour the groups traveled empty farm roads headed for the midway stop at the Rio Vista Airport. It was nice to have the roads to ourselves and take in the interesting sites along the way.   Nearing Rio Vista we could see the many large windmills spinning in the distance. Spacious parking and clean restrooms inside the Airport terminal welcomed our arrival.  After a short break, the groups headed across the Rio Vista Bridge and turned north onto River Rd.  For the next 35-miles the drivers crossed back and forth across historic Sacramento River draw bridges, passing through Iselton, Walnut Grove, Paintersville, and Courtland before arriving at the river town of Freeport.

The east side of the river was adorned with conventional orchards while the expansion of vineyards was evident on the west side. At Freeport the groups hopped onto Interstate 5 for a short stretch to Richardson Blvd in downtown Sacramento. Upon arrival at Detail Maniac’s shop, the group were treated to lunch provided by tour sponsor Detail Maniac.  Shop owner Man Leung’s 8-month old daughter had to be rushed to the hospital resulting in unanticipated open heart surgery which precluded Man from being in attendance himself. But his staff stepped up and took care of our group on his behalf.    The surgery was successful, so all’s well that ends well.

The club is a volunteer organization and depends on the help provided by its members.  A big thank you for those of you the stepped up to be lead us on the journey, including participating in a dry run of the route in advance of the actual event, the Sweeps that kept track of the groups (like herding cats at times), to Linda and Lisa for organizing the cars, and to all that participated showing up with smiles on your faces and demonstrating you Porsche driving prowess.

Now we look forward to CRAB 39 . . .
