Formation & Sunday School Continues

Sunday at 9:30 am

In addition to Rotation Sunday School for children and our Youth Formation class for 6-12th graders, we have several options for adults! Coffee & Conversation is a self-led group is open to parents and guardians of children or youth, who would like to gather to discuss faith, life, and parenting. This class meets in the youth suite downstairs.

The Lectionary Class (begins on Sept. 24) takes a closer look through insightful discussion of that Sunday’s lectionary readings. This class is lay-led and meets in the library. The Adult Henslee Hall Class will begin a 4-week series on Hospitality facilitated by Mother Elizabeth and the Reverend Mary Davis. And finally, Fr. Cal will offer a 4-week Newcomer Class in Henslee Hall. Check out the full descriptions of all these classes in the Guide to Participation

Lector & Intercessor Training

After the late service

There will be a training for all folks who signed up to be Lectors or Greeters this Sunday, Sept. 17 after the late service.

If you signed up for one (or both) of these ministries, please make plans to be there! Thank you!

Justice Knox House Meetings

Sundays

Oct. 1 & 15

Noon

Henslee Hall

And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God? -Micah 6:8

If you are interested in being part of Good Sam's Justice Knox group - please join us on either October 1 or October 5 at noon in Henslee Hall. You'll learn more about plans for Justice Knox this year. Erin Keck will host the October meeting and Caitlin Thrash and Linda Alexiades.

The Justice Knox mission is to understand problems facing the Knoxville community through person-to-person conversation, and to grow those conversations into prioritized, research-based action items. These action items are targeted and have a real impact on the lives of underserved—or not before heard—community members.

Over the past seven years, we have made real progress with mental health, unfair punishments in schools, and affordable housing. And we are not done yet! We have ongoing projects to reduce gun violence in Knoxville, implement restorative practices in Knox County Schools, and decrease homelessness in our city. We do all this with the power of organized people!

Blessing of the Animals

Sun., Oct. 1

4:00pm

Outdoor Chapel

Weather Permitting

The Blessing of the Animals will be held in the outdoor chapel, on Sunday, October 1 at 4pm. Bring your pets for a fun, brief, outdoor service in celebration and thanksgiving for “all creatures great and small.” Please bring all pets on a leash or in a pet carrier.

In case of inclement weather, we will hold this event on another day. Thanks to the Daughters of the King (DOK) for sponsoring this event and collecting items to take to Young Williams Animal Center. Please bring something from the following list* to the pet blessing. Your donations are appreciated!

  • dog, puppy, cat or kitten canned or dry food
  • peanut butter
  • old towels
  • paper towels

This simple, sweet service is in honor and observation of The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, which is on Wednesday, October 4.

Book Group for September

The Good Sam Book Club will be meeting again on Thursday, October 5, at 6:00 PM in Henslee Hall. The book we're reading is Coroner's Dance by Dr. Gregory Phelps, a Good Sam parishioner. This is a suspenseful novel about a major disaster that occurs at a quiet hospital in North Carolina right before Christmas, and the unprepared staff and administration who must handle it.

We'll be having a potluck supper of Mexican Lasagna, salad, maybe some hors d'oeuvres, and a White Chocolate Raspberry Trifle. Greg will be there to talk about his book and sign any that you might bring. It should be a fun event, and anyone is welcome!

We don't have any books scheduled past October at this time. We're trying something new and exciting to select our books - you should definitely join the group if you haven't already! If you have any questions, please call Kathy Gray at 423-379-0091, or email [email protected].

Movie DVDs Needed

When you are cleaning out your stash of movies, please consider donating them to the church. We need them when we host Family Promise and also for Parents Night Out. We can use both adult and children’s movies with ratings up to PG13. Thanks!

Cash in the Plate

The Cash In The Plate for this coming Sunday goes to Morocco Earthquake Relief through World Central Kitchen.

In the late night hours on September 8, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the High Atlas Mountains south of Marrakech, Morocco. At this point, nearly 3000 people are confirmed dead. Many thousands more have been left injured and homeless in a very remote area of their country.

A big need right now for the people of Morocco is basic food and water. To this end, World Central Kitchen has stepped in to assist. Started in 2010 by renowned chef and humanitarian Jose Andres after the earthquake in Haiti, World Central Kitchen has been on scene after disasters all over the world. Supplies are being provided by helicopter and 4 x 4 vehicles, but it is hoped that Chef Andres can soon utilize his mobile kitchens to provide nourishment, support and kindness to the people of this wonderful country. Any assistance that we can give will be certainly appreciated.

You can make an online cash plate gift to the cash in the plate on the Good Sam online giving page. There is an option on the giving page to give to the "Cash in Plate". As always, you may also send a check to Good Samaritan. Please put "Morocco Relief" in the memo line.
