Join us for a beach cleanup!
On Saturday, June 3rd, we will be hosting a beach cleanup in Surfside as part of our partner program SPLASh. We will be focusing on the Crab St. area, which is used by a lot of waterbirds and is also quite trashy. We're looking for volunteers to help us cleanup this habitat for the birds! If you would like more information, or would like to sign up, please click the link below.
Save the Dates!
We've got lots of events coming up, so take a look and click for more information.
Want to Volunteer at GCBO?
We could use some help for a few months taking care of the hummer feeders and seed feeders on our property!

If you want to put in a few hours a week please let us know! And we’ll show you the ropes! You can sign up using the calendar link below, and if the dates don't work for you, we are flexible. Thank you!!

To make sure the hummers stay healthy we change out hummer feeders twice a week this time of year. Normally around Mondays and Fridays (or similar, and can be weekends).

We have two sets, so you can hang up new ones and take the used ones down to be washed in the field house kitchen. (Think Air conditioning!!) And we have the sugar!

Seed feeders can be filled daily with a small amount or every few days with a bit more seed. We have quite a few and all those youngsters will soon be hitting them! Baby cardinals, wrens, titmice and chickadees!!

You can sign up on our calendar here:
Spring Fling
Spring Fling has come to a close! We had some great species this year and lots of visitors to share them with. Many thanks to all of the awesome volunteers who donated their time at the host station and worked hard to improve the property. We couldn't do it without you!
Lights Out Texas!
Did you know 1 out of every 3 birds migrating through the U.S. passes through Texas? Most migratory birds fly at night, meaning the bright lights of commercial and residential buildings attract and disorient birds. This distraction can cause collisions and leave birds vulnerable to threats on the ground. Take action to protect migrating birds by turning out all non-essential lights outside and inside from 11 pm - 6 am from March 1 to June 15. Learn more and sign up for bird migration alerts: https://tx.audubon.org/urbanconservation/lights-out-texas
We are looking for a new intern!
Education and Outreach Intern
Our current Education and Outreach Intern Adam is headed back to California in June, so we are on the lookout for a new person to join the team! If you are interested in leading field trips, doing outreach, and educating people about birds, this internship might be for you!

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience educating children and adults, planning events, and making educational materials. Its also a helpful introduction into the world of non-profit management!

Housing is provided onsite at GCBO headquarters. While we do not offer interns a salary, we can offer a $100/week stipend. Start and end dates are negotiable depending on school schedules.

Send a cover letter, resume, and unofficial college transcript to: Celeste Silling at csilling@gcbo.org.
Bird Banding
Join us once again for Bird Banding on June 17th from 8 am - noon at our headquarters in Lake Jackson. Come see birds in the hand and learn about the science of bird banding. The earlier you arrive the more birds you'll see. This event is free of charge.

And while you're here, why not check out our native plant nursery and wander our trails too? We even have picnic tables set up for an outdoor lunch -- It's the perfect nature outing for the family!
GCBO Migrations
Welcome to our new Conservation Research Director, Rebecca Bracken!

As most of you know, Sue Heath is retiring at the end of June after a long and wonderful career at GCBO. She will leave a big void and hard shoes to fill! GCBO is lucky that we have found Rebecca Bracken to take on the role at Conservation Research Director. Sue and Rebecca will work together for the next two months until Sue’s retirement.

Rebecca was born and grew up in central Texas. She received a Master’s in Biology from Texas State University and a Ph.D. in Forest Resources with a Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture concentration from Mississippi State University. Her dissertation focused on evaluating the influence of forest management activities on breeding and wintering avian communities and investigated how forest age and management affected nightjar abundance. Between her master’s and Ph.D., she worked on several field projects ranging from songbirds in New Hampshire, Louisiana, and Australia to shorebirds and wading birds in Wyoming and Oklahoma. She can’t wait to be back in Texas and working on the Gulf Coast again.
Welcome to our new Biology Intern, Ben! Ben Ryan Torres Jr. was born and raised in Angleton, Texas, the youngest of four siblings. Growing up Ben spent a lot of his time with his grandpa deer hunting and fishing, allowing him to learn about the ecosystems and wildlife he was surrounded by. As a child his Mimi gave him a book called North American Wildlife by Susan J. Wernert, this started a deeper interest and understanding of wildlife and ecology. He enrolled in the Wildlife, Fisheries, and Ecology class at Angleton Highschool and his teacher, Mr. Lens, taught him how to identify grasses, forbs, etc. Ben joined AHS’ FFA wildlife team and received the certificate of achievement for AP Environmental Science. During his internship at GCBO, Ben has been learning about Least Terns, Wilson plovers, their nesting habits, and how to prepare for in a future career of Wildlife Biology.

Thanks to Our Major Grantors!
Thanks to Phillips 66 for supporting our conservation work! We recently received a grant from Phillips 66 for $60,000. They have supported us from Day 1 and continue to donate every year, helping us continue our avian conservation programs. We truly appreciate it!
Make an in-kind donation to support our sanctuary needs.
Tablets
We are moving to electronic check-out for our store and event transactions, so we are in need of some tablets. If you have a new or used tablet that you no longer need, we would certainly appreciate it! Doesn't have to be in pristine condition!

Black Oil Sunflower Seed and Chicken Scratch
We feed year-round here at GCBO, and during migration at Quintana. We stock our GCBO feeders to help augment natural foods, and this also helps our monthly banding research project.

Sugar
The hummingbirds are coming our way, and we are looking for granulated sugar donations for their sugar water. Please bring it by our headquarters: 299 Hwy 332 W Lake Jackson. Thanks!
Corporate Matching Programs
Did you know that many corporations have a donation matching program? Corporations can match their employees' volunteer hours and/or donations to nonprofit organizations like GCBO! These types of programs are great because they double your contributions to the causes that you care about! If you work (or are retired from) a corporation, ask them about their matching program today!
Recycle Your Old Technology and Help Birds
The Wireless Alliance is a company that recovers and recycles cell phones, smart phones, tablets, and other consumer recyclables.

We will be collecting these items for Wireless Alliance to keep them out of landfills as well as raise money for our conservation efforts. If you have old technology such as a phone, charger, tablet, or other accessories, consider bringing it to GCBO!
How Can You Help?
You can help support GCBO's mission in several important ways!
Save a Tree and some $!
We are trying to go as paperless as we can to save some trees and quite a bit on printing and mailing costs. We would love if you would let us email you instead of snail mailing a hard copy of any correspondence, including your future copies of the Gulf Crossings. Please email or call Tricia to say: “Hey, GCBO, please start emailing me things! Here is my email…”   Thanks!

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
