SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

NOTICE - EMAIL SCAM

It has come to our attention that a few emails were sent out using the names of people at the church. However, upon further inspection, although it had the right names, the email addresses were not correct. We want you all to be aware of this because you too could possibly receive an email. Yet, we want to assure you that we will not ask for your offerings through email, we will not ask for offerings to be done through gift cards, nor will we ask that you send money somewhere else. If you have doubts about the legitimacy of an email you have received, do not click any links, instead call the office or Brandon. We are actively working with our computer service provider to help prevent future phishing attempts, but cannot guarantee that it will never happen again.

SEASON OF CREATION BEGINS

The Season of Creation is from September 1st – World Day of Prayer through October 4th – The Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. This year’s theme is “Let Justice and Peace Flow"

(Amos 5:24).

SERMON NOTES

We are entering into week 3 of the Season of Creation. This time that is set apart in the church calendar for the whole ecumenical body to answer the cry of creation. During the Season of Creation at Watauga Avenue, we have been telling the Jonah story to look at the elements of the earth. Week 1 we heard about the winds of change that lead Jonah into the sea and lead the sailors to conversion. Last week we read about the famous moment where salvation comes to Jonah in the depths of the sea and the great fish that swallowed him. So join us this week as we explore what happens next. There is going to be a total transformation for the city of Nineveh through the fire of the Spirit that comes to that place.

Yours in Christ

Brandon

GREEN SPACE NEWS

As the effects of climate change continue to worsen, our nation's shorelines are at risk from severe storms, flooding, erosion, and other threats. While hard structures such as bulkheads are prone to damage and can contribute to erosion by deflecting waves, living shorelines can be more effective at protecting coastlines while at the same time creating habitat, purifying water, and benefiting wildlife species.

The National Wildlife Federation has helped construct multiple living shorelines, including at Conquest Beach in Maryland. There the federation along with local partners transformed an unstable riverbank into a living shoreline with a "shingle beach" technique, a technique that uses small stones to protect the beach from severe erosion. Other living shoreline tactics include marsh grass planting, oyster reef creation, and dune building.   (GSN #165)

The Testament of Mary

By Colm Toibin

(F/TOI)

Shortlisted for the 2013 Man Booker Prize, Colm Tóibín's provocative, haunting, and indelible portrait of Mary presents her as a solitary older woman still seeking to understand the events that become the narrative of the New Testament and the foundation of Christianity.

In the ancient town of Ephesus, Mary lives alone, years after her son’s crucifixion. She has no interest in collaborating with the authors of the Gospel—her keepers, who provide her with food and shelter and visit her regularly. She does not agree that her son is the Son of God; nor that his death was “worth it;” nor that the “group of misfits he gathered around him, men who could not look a woman in the eye,” were holy disciples.

Mary judges herself ruthlessly (she did not stay at the foot of the Cross until her son died—she fled, to save herself), and is equally harsh on her judgement of others. This woman who we know from centuries of paintings and scripture as the docile, loving, silent, long-suffering, obedient, worshipful mother of Christ becomes a tragic heroine with the relentless eloquence of Electra or Medea or Antigone.

Tóibín’s tour de force of imagination and language is a portrait so vivid and convincing that our image of Mary will be forever transformed.
