Family Promise Week @ Good Sam

Oct. 1-8

SIGN- UP HERE

We are continuing our Family Promise outreach on Sunday, October 01, going through to Sunday, October 08, 2023. We will be providing supper and overnight housing for 3 families. At the suggestion of Family Promise, we have been providing food cards, which allows families to purchase their own breakfasts. There are also some supplies needed.

Instructions for signing up are on the signup sheet.

See the link HERE.

  • IF YOU SIGN UP FOR TAKE DOWN, that will occur during early service on Sunday, October 08.

  • IF YOU SIGN UP FOR FOOD CARDS OR SUPPLIES, they can be dropped off in Henslee Hall anytime before Sunday, October 01.

  • IF YOU SIGN UP FOR A MAIN COURSE OR SIDE, please indicate what you intend to bring, so we do not have duplicate meals during the week. You can do this by adding it after your name: ex Ann Backus-pizza. Special dietary needs will depend on the families; one of us will email you with any restrictions by Friday, September 29. Meals need to be brought to church at 5:45 pm, so that the families can start dinner at 6:00 pm. Bring the meals hot, as there is no warming oven in Good Sam kitchen.

  • IF YOU SIGN UP FOR OVERNIGHT HOST, please arrive at Good Sam by 7:00 pm, and remember to bring your own sheets or sleeping bag and pillow. Lights out is 10:00 pm. Families need to be woken up around 6:30 am, so they can leave by 7:00 am.

Thank you for your help with our Family Promise Week!

Justice Knox House Meetings

Sundays

Oct. 1 & 15

Noon

Henslee Hall

And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God? -Micah 6:8

If you are interested in being part of Good Sam's Justice Knox group - please join us on either October 1 or October 15 at noon in Henslee Hall. You'll learn more about plans for Justice Knox this year. Erin Keck will host the October meeting and Caitlin Thrash and Linda Alexiades.

The Justice Knox mission is to understand problems facing the Knoxville community through person-to-person conversation, and to grow those conversations into prioritized, research-based action items. These action items are targeted and have a real impact on the lives of underserved—or not before heard—community members.

Over the past seven years, we have made real progress with mental health, unfair punishments in schools, and affordable housing. And we are not done yet! We have ongoing projects to reduce gun violence in Knoxville, implement restorative practices in Knox County Schools, and decrease homelessness in our city. We do all this with the power of organized people!

Tennessee Theatre

Open - House & Silent Film Screening

Sun., Oct. 1

1:00 pm

Freddie is Playing the Mighty Wurlitzer!

Help the Tennessee Theatre celebrate their 95th anniversary! Join them on Sunday, Oct. 1 (95 years after the Theatre first opened) from 1-3pm for a FREE open-house! While the stage will not be open during this self-guided tour, the dressing rooms, lobby, auditorium, and other areas will be open for you to explore and learn more about the history of the Theatre through our self-guided tour packets.

At 3pm, the theatre will show Charlie Chaplin's City Lights accompanied by Freddie Brabson on the Mighty Wurlitzer organ. It's a unique and magical experience to see a silent film with the organ providing the music and sound effects. This film is free and open to the public, and concessions will be available for sale.

When the Tennessee was being built, films were silent so movie palaces such as ours had theatre organs used to accompany the film. By the time the Tennessee opened, films had soundtracks so our Mighty Wurlitzer organ was used as pre-movie entertainment rather than to provide the music and sounds for the film.

Blessing of the Animals

Sun., Oct. 1

4:00pm

Outdoor Chapel

Weather Permitting

The Blessing of the Animals will be held in the outdoor chapel, on Sunday, October 1 at 4pm. Bring your pets for a fun, brief, outdoor service in celebration and thanksgiving for “all creatures great and small.” Please bring all pets on a leash or in a pet carrier.

In case of inclement weather, we will hold this event on another day. Thanks to the Daughters of the King (DOK) for sponsoring this event and collecting items to take to Young Williams Animal Center. Please bring something from the following list* to the pet blessing. Your donations are appreciated!

  • dog, puppy, cat or kitten canned or dry food
  • peanut butter
  • old towels
  • paper towels

This simple, sweet service is in honor and observation of The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, which is on Wednesday, October 4.

Donations for Helping Mamas Knoxville

A Note from Sinead:

We will be collecting items for Helping Mamas Knoxville over the next month. We will gather a variety of hygiene and self care items, to help pack supply kits and support neighbors all over Knox County!

If you have any of the following items, please bring them to the youth suite this week. The youth will decorate a collection bin and flyer to place upstairs for the whole church to get on board with our collection. And we will learn more about the needs for baby items and period hygiene items here in our community! We will also accept diapers, baby clothes and other items to take to the warehouse for an in-person day of service where we'll learn more and pack diapers and orders for various programs served by Helping Mama's!

"The strength of our model is in partnering with other strong organizations to help end poverty. Together, we are able to alleviate stress and ensure time is spent focusing on job training, parenting education, schooling and medical care for their children. 1 in 2 U.S. families cannot afford enough diapers to keep their infant or child clean, dry, and healthy.

Diapers are considered a luxury, therefore not eligible for purchase through WIC or SNAP"

Book Group for October

The Good Sam Book Club will be meeting again on Thursday, October 5, at 6:00 PM in Henslee Hall. The book we're reading is Coroner's Dance by Dr. Gregory Phelps, a Good Sam parishioner. This is a suspenseful novel about a major disaster that occurs at a quiet hospital in North Carolina right before Christmas, and the unprepared staff and administration who must handle it.

We'll be having a potluck supper of Mexican Lasagna, salad, maybe some hors d'oeuvres, and a White Chocolate Raspberry Trifle. Greg will be there to talk about his book and sign any that you might bring. It should be a fun event, and anyone is welcome! Please let Kathy know if you are coming,

We don't have any books scheduled past October at this time. We're trying something new and exciting to select our books - you should definitely join the group if you haven't already! If you have any questions, please call Kathy Gray at 423-379-0091, or email [email protected].

Upcycling Plastic Food Containers

Please consider donating your plastic food containers to the church. We go through them very quickly with sending funeral leftovers home and through Family Promise. The best sizes are around the medium sour cream size. The plastic containers from store prepared salads, sandwiches, etc are perfect too. Anything with a tight cover. Please put clean plastic containers on the center island and we will put them to good use. Thanks.

Movie DVDs Needed

When you are cleaning out your stash of movies, please consider donating them to the church. We need them when we host Family Promise and also for Parents Night Out. We can use both adult and children’s movies with ratings up to PG13. Thanks!

Cash in the Plate

The Cash In The Plate for this coming Sunday goes to Mission of Hope.

Since 1996, the Mission of Hope has ministered to the people of various counties in Kentucky and Tennessee, many of whom are caught in the pockets of poverty and as a result have lost all hope for their future. It is indeed hard to imagine the dire poverty and living conditions that still exist, in many rural areas even today. The Mission of Hope is a year round ministry blessed to assist many of our less fortunate Appalachian neighbors with much needed goods and resources, college scholarships, and help with basic educational, health care and home repair needs. Thank you for the compassionate support in sharing our love, concern and hope for these deserving families.

You can make an online cash plate gift to the cash in the plate on the Good Sam online giving page. There is an option on the giving page to give to the "Cash in Plate". As always, you may also send a check to Good Samaritan. Please put "Mission of Hope" in the memo line.
