Dear Friends,

It was just six weeks ago when before departing for Japan and Hawaii I sent my spring studio newsletter. Settled back into this time zone and in my studio, I am catching up on emails and appointments. Inspired by the rich and colorful Japanese culture, landscape, history and my extraordinary experiences, I am totally inspired to make new paintings and prints.

I was on a sensory overload upon arriving in Japan. I took in everything. The sights, sounds, tastes, smells, you name it. With some downtime to experience Zen moments in the onsens and quiet walks I realized Japan is a place where I will return to dive deeper. The wisdom of Wabi-sabi is everywhere. I continue to have dreams about what I experienced. My abstract paintings are sure to be filled with translations of these.

Upcoming shows! This summer I have paintings in two shows opening in July.

Brand 51, which opens July 8, 7-9:30 pm, at the Brand Library in Glendale, CA. Oh Honey, An Invitational Show of Encaustic Art, opens at the PACE Gallery in Parker, CO, July 27, 6-8 pm. You're Invited! I hope to see you there.

During March I was invited to have my encaustic painting, Glacier Morning, and a recent Icelandic inspired encaustic monotype, printed by an Italian wallpaper company. This all began when Heather Radliffe, an award-winning designer, with Christopher's Kitchen & Bath, and her client visited my studio. It ends up her client loves Iceland almost as much as I do. She decided to theme her entire master bath design and steam shower around the Icelandic landscape.

I totally enjoy when my art continues to have more than one life even after the actual painting and monoprint have been purchased for an art collection.

Thank you so much for your outstanding support and sincere enthusiasm for my work. I hope you have a wonderful summer!

With my warmest regards,

Pat

traveling truths :)

Jetlag: After downloading the app, TimeShifter, jet leg after the 12-hour flight to Tokyo was a non-issue.

Overpacking: I packed a kit bag full of art pencils, etc. (for that just in case scenario)

I never opened it. Didn't have time.

Cuisine+: Sushi, sashimi, ramen, matcha ice cream, shopping, jazz clubs, museums, bike and food tours. Yes, more please!

Souvenirs: Colorful tickets from the shrines and temples visited, rail cards, museum and gallery books, mementos, Japanese handmade papers, and sumi brushes.

Time management: During long train and bus rides when I wasn't looking out the windows, I edited photos and made slide shows on my iPhone to remember where I was and when.

Space tips: I learned to maximize space in my luggage by using packing cubes.

New friends: I went out of my way to meet as many wonderful people as possible.

Language: Only a barrier if you let it be one. Google Translate really works!

Weather: It happens. As I learned in Iceland, just get on with it!

I now own a full-length plastic raincoat with buttons purchased at 7-11 in Kyoto.

Zen moments: the onsen is the perfect place where one can rest your body and quiet your mind. Many other opportunities exist too but, this was my experience.
