Troll Hunting in Scandinavia

We need answers.

Are Trolls Swedish or Norwegian?

What are Trolls?

Troll is a collective term for several types of human-like beings in Nordic folklore and fairy tales with roots in Norse mythology.

Both appearance and characteristics vary, and trolls are usually

considered dangerous and stupid.

NOTE: We are not talking about internet trolls (who might also be considered dangerous and stupid...) and we're not searching for the cute troll dolls that ended up getting their own movies.

🕵🏻‍♂️ Let's go in search of TROLLS in Scandinavia! 🕵🏻‍♀️

Where do trolls live?

🟤 Caves

🟠 Hollowed-out trees

🟢 The enchanted forest

🟤 In dark and dank places

🟠 Under bridges

🟢 In the mountains

Norwegian trolls are said to live out in the country’s beautiful wilderness,

away from the hustle and bustle of its towns and cities.

One such place is Trollfjorden –

this stunning wonder of nature is full of mountains and caves that

make very good homes for trolls.

And in case you’re wondering whether Norwegians are true believers

when it comes to trolls, you betcha they are!

Troll mythology and folklore is still a huge part of their culture.

They’re proud of their mischievous little nature-dwellers, which is why you’ll

see troll souvenirs and books sold in many of their tourist shops

and troll statues in their towns.

There’s even the Hunderfossen Family Park in Lillehammer,

an amusement park that centers around Norway’s fairytales and folklore,

including, you guessed it – Norwegian trolls.

Check out the Troll head natural formation in southwest Iceland!

Visit Fossatún, a country hotel and campsite (complete with the Rock & Troll Café)

renowned for being a centre to learn about Iceland’s troll folklore.

Tröllagarðurinn, or the 'Trolls' Park,' was created by the owners as a recreation for the guests at Fossatún.

Trollskogen is a windswept, grazed pine forest and nature reserve in the northeast corner of the Baltic island Öland, Sweden. The twisted trees of Trollskogen,

or 'Troll Forest,' are up to 200 years old and look as though they are bewitched.

The crooked lichen-covered pines were misshapen by decades of strong winds

off the Baltic Sea. Ivy crawls up many of the trees, while giant old oaks

are scattered throughout the woods. This enchanting and a bit eerie

landscape is thanks to the forest’s unusual geography.

In Denmark, find the Six Forgotten Giants, troll sculptures made from

recycled wood by artist Thomas Dambo.
