Dear Friends of the Arts,
We are so excited about our Gala Fundraiser to celebrate our ten year anniversary, and are thrilled that reservations have been rapidly filling our mailbox. We now have the happy problem of already having a capacity crowd and have removed the option to buy tickets from our website. We hope that those who can't attend in person will join in the fun of our auction in the comfort of their own homes, or anywhere they are through their cell phone or computer. The auction will include amazing items, ranging from exciting outdoor experiences to learning opportunities to travel and dining. We will send you the link soon for the Silent Auction, and you can start bidding as early as next week. The Live Auction may also be bid on in real time the night of the gala.
Lots of other good things are going on at the Center this month, including an art opening tonight, Sept 29! Join us for art, food, music, and friendly conversations. What a great mix!

In Memoriam
Judith Wehrle
1943-2023

We mourn the loss of our great friend and strong supporter, Judith Wehrle. Judith was on our board of directors from 2015 to 2017, and was invaluable as she brought her passion for the arts and her knowledge of non-profits to the fledgling Center for the Arts. She was always a friend, and was a stalwart supporter to the end. | |

Gallery Hours
The Center remains open from 11:00 am to 4:00pm during the month of October; however, beginning in November, the Center will revert to its winter hours: Thursday through Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00pm.

We welcome Teela Wild as our new Office Manager. Teela has recently moved to Warren, IL with her partner and their plethora of cats. Teela was previously the City Clerk of Westgate, IA and comes to us with a working knowledge of small town government as well as familiarity with all that goes into keeping up on the books of such an important part of the local non-profit community as the Galena Center for the Arts.
In her time away from the Center Teela enjoys fixing up their Victorian house, finding furniture to fill it with, and possibly sneaking in a round of golf every now and then.
Please help us in welcoming Teela to the Galena Arts Community.

The Regional Arts Gallery will be showcasing a variety of current work from our regional artists, which always amazes.
The Special Exhibit space will take you on a journey to the far reaches of imagination with a themed exhibit titled Fantasy.
And while you’re browsing the art exhibits, Philip Bergman, cellist with the Dubuque Symphony, will be providing lovely music for your enjoyment. So, plan to come and treat your senses to a night of art, music, and good company.

In the Student Gallery
Galena ARC Wild Clay Adventure
Opening reception Wednesday, October 4
5:30-6:30pm

For the month of October our student gallery will showcase the Galena ARC Wild Clay Adventure pottery workshop. Each student dug up a 5-gallon bucket of "Wild" clay from the Mount Hope Vineyard/Farm just outside Apple River. Then over the course of the 3-month workshop students dried and processed their clay and used pottery wheels as well as hand-building techniques to create beautiful pottery. Students also built a pit fire kiln on the ARC campus, fired their pots and then waxed and polished their vessels. Visit the gallery to see their finished pieces as well as learn about the steps taken to transform clay dug from the local area into finished pottery. | |

Scarecrows!

Keep your eye on the field by the Center because soon the scarecrows will be gathering there. Bring the kids along, so you can park and meet the scarecrows up close! Join in the fun and make your own scarecrow for your yard.
Hope you have as much fun as the tourist family shown here did while making scarecrows at our scarecrow workshop.

Our October Songwriters Showcase shares the original music of regional singer songwriters Jim Mantey and Liliana Asta.
Jim’s songs tell stories about people. surroundings and aspirations, in a jazzy, folky, fingerpicked style that can make you smile.
Liliana shares original music that explores complex emotions through acoustic indie folk pop.

Julien Chamber Choir Concert

We welcome back the Julien Chamber Choir, presenting their fall concert "Even Such is Time". The 20-voice ensemble under the direction of Kristen Eby will perform selections by Haydn, Hindemith, Barnum, Hogan and others.
Additionally, there will be a collaborative song with the Center's Summit Street Singers, their first performance since Covid.
Freewill donations accepted.

Figure Drawing Schedule Changes | |
Starting in October and continuing through the winter months, the Center will be offering once-a-month figure-drawing sessions in the evening to accommodate those who work during the day. The evening class will be held the first Thursday of every month from 5:00 to 7:00pm with K. Kriesel acting as facilitator. The once-a-month evening class will be in lieu of the Thursday afternoon classes. The cost per session is $10. | |

We’re looking for tuba and euphonium players of all ages to join us for a very merry Tuba Christmas performance at Turner Hall December 10th!

Galenian folk hero Jimmie David Post, painted by Harold Martin, was prominently featured in the recent Regional Art Gallery that hosted a variety of beautiful artwork. | |
The Opposing Forces exhibit showed exactly that, from John Lennon’s theme of peace and love to the gun violence against innocent children. | |
September - Shades of Blue | |
Patricia Lehnhardt led six students through the processes of using natural indigo in numerous ways, from making ink and watercolor to dyeing fabrics after creating unique patterns. Sandra Evans, a class participant, said not only did students learn a lot but also enjoyed one another’s company. | |
September - Songwriters Showcase | |
Lenny Wayne, who has been one of the guiding lights of Songwriters Showcase since 2014, started the evening with high energy and fun. | |
