NOTES
SUBSTITUTES NEEDED
As always, we are in need of names to add to our list of potential substitutes. You can express a preference for age or subject area, and let us know if you prefer only dates known in advance vs an early morning call. Please email Krystal if you can help.
HALLOWEEN AT SCHOOL
PK-8 Students are encouraged to wear costumes tomorrow to school. We will have an all school assembly where they can introduce themselves and show off their costumes, followed by our traditional search for the giant jack-o-lantern. There will likely be sugary treats around school on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday.

Later in the week we hope you'll support us in returning to the expectation that candy is not brought or shared at school. We find that among children, candy becomes a kind of currency and affects social dynamics, as well as adding extra sugar to their diets. As explained in the Family Handbook: We encourage families not to include candy, chewing gum, soda, or caffeinated beverages in student lunches and snacks. The school asks parents to support these guidelines when students are eating at school or on field trips. ... We ask that students not share candy at school out of respect for other families’ habits and expectations. The exception to this is in celebration of certain holidays, which will be forewarned in the Monday Memo.
DAY OF THE DEAD (DIA DE LOS MUERTOS)
K-8 students will continue learning about the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) in their Spanish classes this week. The Day of the Dead is a holiday traditionally celebrated in Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries on November 1st and 2nd. As part of this celebration, families build ofrendas (offerings) to honor their deceased loved ones and visit their graves.

In order for students to further their knowledge and understanding of the Day of the Dead and experience part of this cultural celebration, we will be creating and decorating an ofrenda at Riverside. Students and staff who would like to participate are invited to bring in a photo of a family member, friend, or pet that has passed away. These people/pets will then be recognized and celebrated on our ofrenda. Please remember to send in any photos by Tuesday, October 31st. Photos may either be brought in and given to Karin or emailed to her. In order to ensure that your photo is returned to you, please write your family's name on the back of it. Thank you for supporting this opportunity for students to develop their intercultural skills!

We also invite you to visit the ofrenda with your family. The ofrenda will be set up in the solarium of the house starting Tuesday afternoon through the beginning of next week. Check out the students' work.and take a moment to remember your deceased loved ones.
SKI & SNOWBOARD RENTAL FITTINGS
Staff from both Burke Mountain (for the $10-16 weekly rentals) and Village Sport Shop (for the more expensive season leases) will be here on Wednesday right at 12:00 to fit students for their equipment. For those families who are renting or leasing equipment, please be sure you've filled out the appropriate forms in advance.
PK-5 CONFERENCES
PK-5th graders will have half day this Wednesday, November 1 with an early dismissal at 12:30, and only K-5th will have a half day on Thursday, November 2. Conferences will happen during 20-25 minute appointments in the classroom. Please sign up for appointments with classroom teachers.

The K-5th Extended Day Program will run that day from 12:30 until 5:00, and the PreK After School from 12:30-4:15. Please email Sean or email McKenna directly if your elementary school child will be joining at 12:30 so that they can plan the long afternoon accordingly.
6-8 BIOGRAPHY FAIR
Middle school students have been researching impactful people from ancient history (6th grade), America (7th grade), or around the world (8th grade). They are beginning to outline and draft research papers now, as well as plan oral presentations and visual displays.

We encourage parents, grandparents, and friends to join us on Bio Fair day (Friday, November 3) to celebrate their hard work as part of their audience. At 9:00 am 6th graders will present in the yurt and 8th graders will present in the pavilion (dress warmly, we will have propane heaters and fire). At 10:30 7th graders will present in the barn.

FALL FOOD DRIVE
Middle school students, Celia Faherty, Lucy Moriarty, Cora Adams, and Liam Albritton are organizing a food drive to help feed our greater community. All items collected will be donated to The Lyndon Area Food Shelf for Thanksgiving boxes. The Lyndon Area Food Shelf serves Lyndon, Lyndon Center, Lyndonville, Burke Hollow, East & West Burke, Kirby, Newark, Sutton, Sheffield, and Wheelock. They are seeing more need now than ever before and having a hard time keeping their shelves stocked. We need your help with donations of non-perishable items. You will find collection boxes on the porch of the house and barn at Riverside today and until the morning of Friday, November 17th. Thank you so much for your help.
RADA CUTLERY FUNDRAISER
We do not expect all families to participate in these kinds of fundraisers, but we invite you to consider it if the products appeal to you, or if you know someone who would like the link and the chance to support Riverside.

Parent Annie Patoine (3rd grader Paul, 6th grader Lily) has organized a catalogue sale with Rada Cutlery. 40% percent of each sale will be donated back to Riverside. Items from the catalogue make great upgrades to your own kitchen inventory or wonderful gifts for others during the holiday season.
  • Catalogue (sent home with students last week) sales are open until November 10th, when forms should be returned to Krystal. If you place an order through the catalogue, then the order will be shipped directly to the school.
  • Online orders are open until November 17th. Share the link with friends and family, and products can be shipped directly. If you have any questions, you can email Annie Patoine.
ARTS NIGHT
PreK-8th grade students have been working hard in music class, band, chorus, and the drama elective to learn new skills and preparing for Riverside's Performing Arts Night on November 15th at 5:30 pm (students to arrive at 5:15, except band students at 5:00) at the Lyndon Institute Auditorium. All students will be participating in this performance and we hope families will make it a priority to attend and to celebrate their hard work. If your child will not be able to attend, please email Marie ASAP so she can plan for this absence.

Mark your calendar: that afternoon of November 15, K-8th grade students will be rehearsing at LI and pick up will be there at the auditorium door at 3:00 (for K-5th)/3:30 (for 6-8th). While Preschool students will be part of the performance, they will not be part of this off-campus rehearsal.
RIVERSIDE SERVICE DAY
On Friday, Novemer 17 PreK-8th grade students will be engaging in a variety of projects to support H.O.P.E., Lyndon Area Food Shelf, area rehabilitation centers, The Darling Inn Thanksgiving, The Riverside Life Enrichment Center, our local roadsides, and more. That's the last day before our Thanksgiving Vacation, with an early dismissal at:
  • 1:15 from school for PK and 6-8th graders
  • 1:30 from the skating rink for K-5th graders (no EDP option)
PK Afterschool and 6-8th grade EDP will be available that day. Please email McKenna or Sean if your child will be in attendance, so that they can plan the long afternoon accordingly.
