From Fr. Mike Gabriel

This past week, we began another election year with the debate for the candidates for presidency. Truthfully, this is not something I am looking forward to.

I ask you to join with me from now until the 4th of July, Independence Day, to pray especially for our country, as well as for our leaders to do everything possible to stop the violence our country and city faces. Let us hope that they respect all life and call for justice for everyone, based on our inalienable rights "to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

In your personal prayer, at Mass, and in your reading and conversation, let us pray and talk with each other about what is happening in our world and ask for direction from the Holy Spirit to go forward together.

Pray for victims or terrorism and discrimination. And in your personal prayers, examine your own conscience about ways in which we may have diminished the respect for life that we owe to each other by the way we have talked about people. Let us look to Jesus for direction and beg for the Holy Spirit to empower us to work for justice and respect for all life.

June really flew by! It hard to believe schools have been out already a month. Continue to enjoy the gifts of summer and the goodness of God. See in this week’s bulletin some of the strong points highlighted about NCA.

May God renew your spirit, grant you your deepest needs, and with any storms in your lives, guide you on the path with the Spirit.

Be at peace and with God’s love.

Growing in Faith

St. John the Baptist cut quite the path in the Bible. He healed with water and proclaimed someone even greater to come.

“I am not fit to loosen his sandal strap,” John said in Luke 3:16. “He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire.”

What a holy story filled with drama and tension and hope.

And what a perfect saint for our mother, Jean Sweeney, who died April 25 at age 92.

Jean was born about a week before St. John’s Day, which is June 24, and was given the French version of his name.

Our family celebrates the saints we are named for, and the party for St. John was held on the eve, which, because it falls so close to the summer solstice, has been aligned with midsummer celebrations of bonfires and feasting.

Our mother embraced this in true John style, rolling a wheel of (real) fire off the backyard storm door, as friends cheered from the deck, to honor him and to call down a long hot summer. It was a holy celebration, filled with drama and tension and hope.

Last summer, our mom wrote here about her saint and what he offers us: “the power to change our lives, our prejudices, our belief, our actions.”

“We are all called to love one another,” she wrote. “Remember what John said: Prepare the Way of the Lord!”

As we celebrate this saint, may we, this community of believers, seize that kind of power to heal the world.
