You Helped Coconut Survive Against All Odds

At two days old Coconut the kitten was brought to LHS fighting for her life. She was found at a construction site and had suffered severe trauma to her head and leg. The tiny kitten struggled to regain consciousness and could barely move her leg. The good news was that she still had some fight left in her, meaning there was a chance of recovery. The veterinary team wasted no time creating a customized plan for their tiny patient.

For pets like Coconut, your support means we have the resources to save lives.

Once the team had done all they could for Coconut, we called on one of our Foster Superheroes to take on her care - hoping she could beat the odds and recover. Here is what her Foster Hero shared with the foster group after Coconut's first 24 hours:

"I'm looking after a little week-old baby, Coconut, who had some major head trauma. I hadn't shared yet because I didn't think she was going to make it. Last night she was minimally responsive, stiff as a board, and had to be tube-fed. This afternoon, she's purring, trying to suckle, and making baby biscuits. She's still not out of the woods, but I've got some hope for her now!"

And after two weeks in her care, our Foster Hero shared this update:

"Coconut is starting to play with toys and I just don't think I've ever seen anything so adorable!" Coconut's eyes still didn't quite focus together, but she could play!

Yesterday, Coconut came back to LHS for her spay surgery. She is the most adorable little snuggle bug with the biggest purr for such a tiny thing! Today she is cuddling with her new kitten friends while she waits for her new family to come and take her home tomorrow. Who is adopting this special bundle of love? The rescuers who found her at the construction site: A perfect circle back to a happy ending.

YOUR donations and support ensure animals like Coconut receive exactly what they need when they need it — not only lifesaving veterinary treatment but also the chance to find a loving home of their very own. It's all thanks to compassionate dedicated people like you and we are so grateful.

Foxtail Barley — Why it is a Danger to Your Dog

This long feathery grass looks beautiful, but foxtail barley seeds have tiny barbs that can attach to your dog’s coat and burrow into his skin, ears and nose. Foxtail seeds can lead to serious infection once inside your dog's body because they don't break down. Embedded foxtails can cause discharge, abscesses, swelling, pain, and even death. Find out how you can protect your companion.

Featured Available Pet: Whiskey

Meet Whiskey, a spirited and adventurous dog who found his way to LHS in the most unexpected manner. This playful pup climbed into a delivery van and ended up far from home – dropped off at a shelter in New Mexico. The shelter was running out of room and contacted us for a transfer, which brought Whiskey to us. He is a well-traveled pup!

Whiskey's energetic personality shines through every day, especially when playing fetch – his absolute favorite game. With his boundless energy and lovable nature, Whiskey is ready to find a forever home where he can share his zest for life and playful spirit. He can be a shy boy when first meeting new people, so all members of a potential new home will need to come and meet Whiskey – possibly more than once to have a proper introduction.

Whiskey has had a DNA test and the results are quite interesting! He is 31% Boxer, 14.3% Akita, 14.3% Australian Cattle Dog, 13.1% American Pit Bull Terrier, 9.7% Labrador Retriever, 9.3% German Shepard, and 8.3% Border Collie! His ideal home would be one that can match his energy and provide him with all the love he deserves! Adopt Whiskey, and bring home a loyal friend who will shower you with unconditional love and happiness!
