"9 to 5: The Musical"

September 7, 7:30 PM

The Civic Theatre, 313 North 5th Street, Lafayette IN

Directed by John Collier

Music Direction by Paul Addison

The show runs from September 7 - 16, 2023

Set in the late 1970s, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic. Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains "otherwise engaged," the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can't she?

The Art of Containment: Finding the Best Way to Hold Your Personal Story

September 30, 2023, 12:00 pm

Online

You’ve mined your memories, written your scenes, come to some insights—yet the essay still doesn’t seem to fully engage your reader. Sometimes the solution can be found by gathering these parts into a stronger container, the way you might choose the perfect vase for a bouquet. In this workshop, we will explore the various “container scenes” writers have used to structure their essays, and how you can identify container scenes that might already exist in your own work.

Grandmaster Flash

August 23, 2023, 07:30 PM

Loeb Playhouse

Who knows what hip-hop would sound like without Grandmaster Flash? A musical pioneer in every sense of the word, Flash transformed the turntable into an expressive and complex instrument, and introduced the world to record scratching, beat juggling, and breaks. His mastery of these techniques elevated DJ’ing to an art form, while his legendary parties in the South Bronx became the cradle of hip-hop culture.

This audiovisual lecture/demonstration is an educational, entertaining, and interactive experience that takes you on a journey with one of the founding fathers of hip-hop. As the architect of the quick mix theory, Grandmaster Flash will show you how as a teenager, he used his knowledge of electronic repair to experiment with different styles and techniques and bridge the gap between musical genres—incorporating elements of funk, soul, and disco into his mixes. Now, as we celebrate 50 years of hip-hop, a whole new generation will experience a once in a lifetime hip-hop history lesson from one of the creators and legends in the genre.

The Weather Station

Soft Office by Bridgette Bogle

September 8, 2023, 6:00 pm

658 Main Street, Suite 212, Lafayette, IN

The Weather Station is pleased to present Soft Office, a site-specific installation by artist Bridgette Bogle, opening September 8th and on view through October 21st.

COVID confused spaces. Suddenly the domestic was also the office, and the studio was also the nursery. Bridgette Bogle has been tangling and weaving these separate categories together for years. First through deconstructing paintings and later through awkward and soft sculptures.

In her work, Bogle stretches, pads, sews, and secures a variety of domestic materials into sculptural forms and wall hangings. These soft sculptures echo the pliable shapes of the human body, while also referencing objects of household care and coziness like cushions and bedding. Pillows, like the maternal body, are associated with softness, comfort, and in overabundance, suffocation and smothering, and in this body of work, pillows stand in as metaphors for motherhood and family life. Many of these pieces suggest aspects of the artist's own body and experience, working through the pandemic, gaining weight, and playing an emotional support role in her family.

Please join us for an opening reception for Soft Office on September 8th, 6-9 pm.
