“I am changing into a
regular chauffeur. I like that better because the managing job is growing so large that to do it well you ought to stay always at home—it came down to getting another person for either one place or the other & I chose the chauffeuring which has more action & variety.”

Photograph of Eleanor “Nora” Saltonstall in Mrs. Daly’s Unit in Angicourt, France
|
Eleanor “Nora” Saltonstall, (1894–1919), volunteered with several organizations in France during World War I, becoming a chauffeur for the Red Cross in July 1918. For her service she earned the French military decoration Croix de Guerre for service under fire.
In the letter she wrote on 26 July 1918, she describes driving at night without lights, so as to not be seen on the roads, as well as driving Mrs. Daly to Paris, France. She ends the letter by describing her work, “You see my work is not particularly high toned, but almost any work is on the same order, 2/3 drudgery & 1/3 interesting, exciting or amusing which makes up for the rest.”
Nora died in 1919, at age 24, of typhoid fever contracted during a trip with friends to the west coast of the United States.
