NYMC Celebrates the Class of 2023 at 164^th Commencement Exercises

The NYMC community buzzed with excitement and anticipation as the Class of 2023 celebrated their dedication to medicine, biomedical science and the health sciences and looked onward to the journey that lies ahead of them. Behind Sunshine Cottage families, friends and faculty gathered to commemorate the graduates for their time at the College, on May 22, 23 and 24. With the beaming sun and rich greenery of the NYMC campus, the graduates glowed as they solidified their commitment to their respective professions. The three ceremonies—the GSBMS on May 22, the SOM on May 23 and the SHSP on May 24—conferred 389 degrees to the Class of 2023, including 207 M.D. degrees; 41 D.P.T. degrees; 9 Ph.D. degrees; 76 M.S. degrees; 49 M.P.H. degrees; and 7 Dr.P.H. degrees. Department of Surgery Hosts 20^th Annual Louis R.M. DelGuercio Distinguished Visiting Professorship and Research Day

The Department of Surgery hosted the 20^th Annual Louis R.M. DelGuercio Distinguished Visiting Professorship and Research Day on May 24, with internationally acclaimed cardiologist Valentin Fuster, M.D., Ph.D., president of Mount Sinai Heart and physician-in-chief of The Mount Sinai Hospital and the general director of the National Center for Cardiovascular Research in Madrid, Spain, delivering the keynote address on the role of imagenomics in enhancing cardiovascular health throughout the lifespan

Sponsored annually since 2002, the Louis R.M. DelGuercio Research Day is named for the late Louis R.M. Del Guercio, M.D., professor emeritus of surgery, who served as chair of the Department for 24 years before retiring in 2000. The event provides students, residents and fellows, with both an opportunity to showcase their research and an occasion to network, learn from one another and potentially combine efforts to promote the advancement of surgical research. 

The event concluded with the awards presentation.

NYMC Hosted the 12th Annual Paul K. Woolf, M.D., Pediatric Trainee Research Day

The Department of Pediatrics hosted the 12^th Annual Paul K. Woolf, M.D., Pediatric Trainee Research Day on May 17 to highlight innovative research in pediatrics. The event is named after the late Paul K. Woolf, M.D., SOM senior associate dean for Westchester Medical Center and associate professor of pediatrics, who passed away in 2010 and was instrumental in developing the pediatric cardiovascular program at NYMC and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., third from right, professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology and cell biology and anatomy, and associate chair of pediatrics, and Michael H. Bench-to-Bedside Seminar Series: Fetal Biophysical Profile, Development of an In-utero Apgar Score

NYMC presented the Bench-to-Bedside Seminar Series: Fetal Biophysical Profile, Development of an In-utero Apgar Score on May 24. Keynote speaker Lawrence D. Platt, M.D., clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the David Geffen School of Medicine UCLA, dived into the continual advances made in obstetrics and gynecology, ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis. Study Addresses Disparities in Women and Diverse Racial and Ethnic Groups in Radiation Oncology

Though the diversity of the United States continues to grow, the disparity of women and people from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in medicine pursuing careers in the field of radiation oncology persists. A recent study conducted by NYMC faculty and students and published in Advances in Radiation Oncology demonstrated that medical students showed little to no difference in considering radiation oncology as a specialty across races and ethnicities, making additional education and exposure to opportunities in radiation oncology as well as further research into barriers to entry into the field paramount to addressing these inequities in the future. Five Tips to Stay Safe During Tick Season from NYMC's Lyme Disease Expert

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month and the threat of tick-borne illnesses is on the rise in Westchester and all over the nation. As tick season has been in full swing since March and people can expect to be at high risk of tick exposure through November, said Lyme disease expert Paul Arnaboldi, Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology. NYMC's Blood Drives Donate More Than 500 Units This Academic Year

The NYMC community came out for Donate Life Club's blood drive on May 4 with thirty-eight donors helping 115 patients who need blood and plasma in hospitals.

This academic year, the club hosted four blood drives, which totaled 177 donations, which saved the lives of more than 500 patients.

"Donating blood is an amazing way to save lives with just one hour of your time," said Bryson Walker, SOM Class of 2026, student liaison for Donate Life Club. "Each donation can save the lives of up to three patients in need of transfusion. Only three percent of people who are eligible to donate, so every person makes a huge difference."
