Flooding Cities Need to Get More Spongy
First, we’d like to share our best wishes for a peaceful and
equitable solution to the armed conflict with Israel and Hamas. The
one thing we all have in common is our children, and we hope for the
survival of all innocent civilians.
On the living architecture front, let’s follow the philosophy of
Kongjian Yu, one of the world’s foremost advocates of nature-based
solutions, including the Sponge City approach: Today’s concrete- and
asphalt-heavy cities act as a sealer atop the previous natural
landscape. Because they are impermeable, water can’t sink into the
ground—it has to rage across town, turning subway stairs into
waterfalls and swamping schools as we’ve seen in NYC.
As GRHC Media Partners, we invite you to discover the future of
urban sustainability at the
2023 New York Region City Grey to Green Conference
on October 23-24. This groundbreaking event, hosted by
Green Roofs for
Healthy Cities (GRHC), is your
gateway to the latest advancements in green infrastructure and
sustainable urban development in the New York metro area.
Join GRHC at the
Virtual Green Infrastructure Research Symposium
on October 25th from 12pm – 5pm EST. This pay what you can event
delves into the forefront of green infrastructure research. Immerse
yourself in a day of knowledge exchange as emerging professionals
and seasoned academics converge to explore the possibilities of
sustainable urban solutions.
On November 2 & 3 don’t miss GRHC’s
Cascadia Grey to Green conference,
a visionary gathering that converges in the vibrant city of
Vancouver, British Columbia. This transformative event is dedicated
to exploring the profound intersection of ecological harmony,
sustainable development, and innovative design solutions. Join GRHC
as they unveil the potential for creating greener, more resilient
landscapes that contribute to climate change solutions and elevate
the Cascadia region toward a sustainable future.
The
IN/ARCH (ISTITUTO NAZIONALE DELL’ARCHITETTURA) Veneto Lifetime
Achievement Award has been
conferred unanimously to Emilio Ambasz, the prophet of green
architecture. Born in Argentina, cosmopolitan in life and work, and
deeply connected to Italy, Ambasz is one of the most extraordinary
designers in the history of architecture. Kudos, Emilio!
