Dear Friends of the Arts,

Recently we have enjoyed a few brisk mornings, letting us know that fall is right around the corner. Mother Nature is a consummate artist, and our region can be breathtaking dressed in fall colors. When you take a ride to see the beauty outside, I hope you can also come by the Center to see the beauty within. The variety and quality of what our regional artists create is awe inspiring. If you have friends visiting the area, let them know that we also have ample free parking, and there is no charge to visit the galleries!

We are gearing up for our first gala fundraiser, celebrating our ten years of operation. I hope you will be able to join us in celebration, whether you are in town to enjoy the "Embrace the Experience" gala at Eagle Ridge, or would prefer to bid on-line for our silent auction items from home or vacationland.

When you visit the Center, be sure to check out the walls in the student gallery. As local schools haven't had time yet to create new art to exhibit, we decided to show you some of what our own recent classes and workshops have done. This will be up until the start of October. We plan to be doing more, and if you have ideas for classes you would like to see, click here to share your ideas with Sandra, our gallery manager.

Enjoy the beauty around you!

Future Events

Opening Reception for Fantasy!

The galleries will be sporting a new look with two new exhibits on September 29, the night of the next Opening Reception. The Regional Arts Gallery will once again feature an eclectic mix of art but as you walk into the Special Exhibit space, the art will transport you to Fantasyland. Artists were asked to create art inspired by the theme of fantasy. The art will take you on a journey to places only found in one’s imagination. Plan to join in the fantastical experience on September 29 from 5 – 7 p.m.

Summit Street Singers

About twenty singers joined voices making joyful music at the organizational meeting of the Summit Street Singers. Rehearsals will begin in earnest on Monday, September 11 at 7 pm, and will continue on Mondays through October 30. Participation is open to anyone who would like to sing! Join us!

Summit Street Singers are sponsored by the Goldmoor Inn.

Art that Stands Out in its Field

Call for Scarecrows!

Do you have some old clothes that aren't your style anymore? Consider making a scarecrow, either to live at your house or place of business, or to exhibit at the Center.

Our annual outdoor exhibit of Scarecrows, "Art that Stands Out in its Field," is spreading all over town! The scarecrow population in Galena grows every year, and we are hoping this will be the best yet.

Use your imagination to create whatever characters you like (no politics, please!) If you want your scarecrow to live at the Center (we promise to feed it and care for it) you can bring it to us, or if you want it at your place, let us know so we can include it on the scarecrow map. If you need a wooden scarecrow frame, we

Scarecrows at Prairie Ridge

will have some available for $10 to cover the cost of the wood. Scarecrows should go up around October 1, and stay up until Halloween.

If you would like to create with a group, we will have a scarecrow building party at the Center on Sept. 23, 10-12 am. Join us for the fun.

Recent Activities

at the Center

Thank you, DRA!

The Galena Center for the Arts was recently awarded a grant from Dubuque Racing Association to create a Junior Advisory Board. This project will consist of up to 12 young adults between the ages of 17-31 from the region. The goal is to create buy-in from this age group, as well as expand our programming. Jr Board members will learn how to network, sit on a board, provide feedback to Galena Center for the Arts, volunteer and create events. Members are expected to serve a 1 year term.

Board members B'Ann Dittmar & Irene Thraen-Borowski are assisting with getting this project off the ground. They're happy to report the Junior Advisory Board has already met several times, officers are established and ideas are flowing. This new energetic group is ready to host a workshop through a partnership with Riverview Center at the end of September that will focus on mental health and community, while of course including the arts. With the universal stress of our busy lives and going back to school in the fall, the group quickly zeroed in on this topic. You won't want to miss this opportunity. Stay tuned for more details.
