Worship Notes

To her great disappointment and ours, Shannon Kershner is unable to lead worship this Sunday as she is quarantining with COVID. We wish her a very speedy recovery!

This Sunday’s Jazz at Four service will be our last afternoon worship service until Sunday, September 10.

A worship team will be using this upcoming sabbatical season to refocus our afternoon worship experience in preparation for its relaunch after Labor Day. Look for more information toward the end of summer!

Sermon Series

This Sunday we conclude the sermon series “I believe...” — which has been an opportunity for us to take a closer look at the Apostles’ Creed. This week we will focus on “I believe ... in the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.”

Summer Worship Schedule

Throughout the summer we will gather for one worship service each Sunday, at 10:00 a.m.

Then on Sunday, September 10 we will add a second Sunday morning worship service. After Labor Day we will be worshiping at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Until then we look forward to continuing to worship with you at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays.

This Sunday evening enjoy a festive choral concert as the Fourth Church Choral Society and St. James Cathedral choirs present “Orb and Sceptre: Music for the Coronation” at St. James Cathedral.

Come hear regal and celebrative works by Handel, Vaughan Williams, and Parry while surrounded by the music of combined choirs.

Sunday, May 21

6:30 p.m.

at St. James Cathedral (65 E. Huron)

If you have not yet contributed a card, note, or letter for Shannon Kershner, thanking her for her ministry among us and wishing her well in her new call to Atlanta’s Central Presbyterian Church, please take a moment to do so by this Sunday, May 21 so we might add it to the Memory Box we will present to Shannon as a gift from the congregation.

These private expressions of gratitude, memories, and well wishes can be

  • mailed to the church office (Fourth Presbyterian Church, Attn. Memory Box, 126 E. Chestnut, Chicago, IL 60611.2014)
  • dropped off at the church reception desk or in Coffee Hour
  • emailed to memorybox@fourthchurch.org

We will present the box to Shannon next Sunday, May 28, which will be her last Sunday leading us in worship.

Immediately following the 10:00 a.m. service on that day, we will hold a congregational meeting in the Sanctuary. The meeting has been called by Session for the purpose of dissolving our pastoral relationship with Shannon.

Then after the meeting we will gather in Anderson Hall and the Commons for a reception in honor of Shannon. We hope you will join us for that opportunity to express our gratitude and well wishes to Shannon and her family as they prepare to move to Atlanta.

Come celebrate and give thanks for Shannon Kershner’s ministry among us!

This Sunday we observe Dedication Commemoration Sunday at Fourth Church, declared by Pastor John Timothy Stone in 1914 to be observed on the third Sunday of each May.

It was on May 10 of that year that the Fourth Church congregation first worshiped in the Michigan Avenue Sanctuary. Not only did a series of dedicatory services follow, but later that month the new Sanctuary and Parish House buildings were host to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, including the assembly’s Communion service attended by more than 1,800 worshipers.

It was on our centennial celebration of this anniversary, in 2014, that Shannon Kershner first preached at Fourth Church as our then newly called Pastor.

As we mark this dedication anniversary, we give thanks for all who have made possible our place in the city from which to do ministry.

The generations that have gone before us left a vibrant legacy, not only in the bricks and mortar of the Sanctuary and Parish House buildings but also in the financial foundation from which we carry forth our ministry. It was the $25,000 that remained after the completion of the 1914 building project that began the Fourth Church endowment fund.

Just as we carry on the work of the church today, so too we are committed to passing on the legacy of that ministry for future generations. If you are creating or revising your will or are considering a legacy gift to Fourth Presbyterian Church or Chicago Lights, we invite you to be in touch with Katy Frey Bever, Director of Development, for information about our Legacy Society.

On Tuesday evening, May 30 Fourth Church will cohost “Our Tears Are the Same Color.”

In this evening of dialogue and understanding, Robi Damelin and Laila Aksheikh, bereaved Palestinian and Israeli mothers, will share their stories of loss and their journey to peace.
