Pastoral Letter from Bishop Bridgeforth: Peace is our work, everywhere

Many people say, “We can’t find goodness anywhere.

The light of your face has left us, Lord!”

But you have filled my heart with more joy

than when their wheat and wine are everywhere!

I will lie down and fall asleep in peace

because you alone, Lord, let me live in safety.

                                    –Psalm 4:6-8, CEB

My family still resides in and around Decatur, Alabama. If you search Decatur, Alabama, you will learn that before the conflict in Palestine-Israel escalated to all-out war, Steve Perkins, a 39-year-old African-American man, was shot by several Decatur Police officers. Steve’s death on the front lawn of his home invoked outrage across the city and has sparked protests, rallies, memorials, and other calls for justice and peace. I did not know Steve, but I know Steve’s plight. I know what it means to be confronted with violence and live with the threat of death every time I leave my home. With Steve’s death, we add to the litany of unarmed Black men who died at the hands of state-sanctioned violence. I wonder if even being home is as safe as I tell myself it should be.

Birchwood Camp

Birchwood Camp Board of Directors positions open

Birchwood Camp is owned by the Alaska United Methodist Conference and operated by an independent Board of Directors. The Board is a mix of pastors, lay people and community supporters. Board members are the visionaries, setting the direction for Birchwood today, tomorrow and into the future.

We are looking for persons with experience/interest in construction/project management, accounting/book keeping/finance and personnel/human resources. The most important experience/interest is a love of camping and outdoor ministries.

Board terms are 3 years in length. If you have served in the past and have been off the board for at least one (1) year, you are eligible to be on the Board again. You do not need to live in Anchorage to be a Board member. Terms begin in January 2024.

The Board meets 4 times a year and has been meeting by Zoom to include Board members from across the state.

To learn more or express your interest, contact Sandra Woods (Board President) surywoods@yahoo.com.

Emergency Response Team Training (ERT)

The training will be Nov. 4th from 9:00am-3:00pm, at Anchor Park UMC (2300 Oak Drive) in Anchorage. ERTs are required to be 18 years old and physically able to do the work.

The United Methodist Board of Church and Society joins other faith communities calling for a ceasefire, de-escalation and restraint amid the violent conflict between Israel and Hamas. Spreadsheet provides copyright information for popular hymnals

Like many pastors, staff and volunteers, Rev. Lisa Connolley was frustrated with how much time she spent figuring out what songs were covered by which license holder for presentation and streaming. A document produced by Sharon Meeds, supporting the music ministry at Browns Point UMC, is something that may save her and others a lot of time! The two have also been meeting with staff at Disciple Ministries to perfect the work and share it more broadly. Thanks to Sharon for sharing her work!

Annual report highlights new beginnings

United Women in Faith had a year of transition in 2022, and its newly issued annual report pulls it all together. The women’s organization took a new name, adopted a new mission statement and opened new pathways for membership. Sally Vonner, recently installed as the top executive of UWF, says the report reflects a renewed sense of purpose.

Values Statement
We acknowledge that the Methodist Church is complicit with and rooted in the colonization of Alaska and recognize that we live in that ongoing legacy. We lament the harm and trauma that our faith community causes. John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Movement, summarized God’s directives with three Rules: do no harm, do good, and attend to the ordinances of God. We also celebrate the grace, the love, and the good that our church does that calls us to re-imagine mission through intentional discipleship with one another.
We will live into the transition to a Mission District committed to:
Alaska Conference Values
  1. The love of God, neighbor, and self, demonstrated by the deliberate embracing and valuing of differences, the leveling of imbalances between people and systems, and the intentional dismantling of inequities in whatever forms they present themselves.
  2. Healing, grace-filled mission with communities and churches that prioritizes local experiences and shares resources across time and distance through equitable relationships.
  3. Living into connectionalism by belonging to and trusting in one another to nurture relationships that celebrate the gifts each of our communities bring, allowing us to move forward in a decolonized way.
