During this tragic and frightening time, Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit Stands with Israel. We pray for a prompt end to the violence and, above all, for peace.

FINDING TIME

by Jo Strausz Rosen

In her book, Women Holding Things, author and artist Maira Kalman paints colorful images of the women in her life. In it, she points out perceived exhaustion, anger, fortitude, guts and patience – her philosophy in poetry and prose. She brings memories and photos to life in her paintings and inspires with her words.I am particularly inspired by her remembrances of her parents. Descriptions of failed relationships, love, and the human condition. Family members lost in the holocaust. Memories of what was and what could have been.

Kalman inspires me to reflect on our lives, our families and our work. Each of our residents at Jewish Senior Life holds the gift of time.

BISTRO, BOUTIQUE, FRIENDLY VISITS AND MORE!

There is so much going on at Jewish Senior Life and it’s a joy to be a part of it. Currently, we have opportunities to volunteer in many areas, including:

Marvin’s Bistro / Krohlik Café

Marvin’s (located in the Fleischman Residence): Shifts are available Monday and Tuesday, 11:30am-1:30pm.

Krohlik (located in Meer Apartments): Shifts are available 11:30am-1:30pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Sharon’s and Meer Boutique

We need a couple of friendly fashionistas to join our team on Fridays at both boutiques:

Sharon’s Boutique (in the Fleischman Residence), 11:00am-2:00pm

Meer Boutique, 1:00-3:00pm

Friendly Visits

Especially in the colder months, when it’s harder to get out, many of our residents would love a visit. Visitors come for an hour once per week and the times are flexible.

Our memory care residents would like to get a little fresh air and volunteers are needed Monday-Friday, 2:00-4:00pm, to take them out for a little stroll.

To sign up, fill out our online form, at jslmi.org/volunteer. Also, feel free to call or email Beth Robinson at 248-592-5062 / brobinson@jslmi.org for more information.

Don’t Write Me Off!

The JSL book project is wrapping up and In November copies of “Don’t Write Me Off!” will be available at Lives Well Lived, at the boutiques and on Amazon, but for a sneak peek, here’s the cover, featuring all thirty-nine of the JSL residents who contributed their stories. Big thank you to volunteers Ira Goldberg and Jon Lybeck who took the pictures and Brett Panter for the cover design!

Lives Well Lived: Wrinkles in Time

For more fabulous storytelling, join us at Lives Well Lived: Wrinkles in Time, on Tuesday, November 14, at 7pm. Meet our Don’t Write Me Off! writers and editors. Local luminaries author Bill Haney and journalist Jack Lessenberry will offer a tribute to filmmaker Sue Marx. And we will enjoy her Oscar-winning short film “Young at Heart,” as well as short documentaries, “Death Metal Grandma,” and “Wendy’s Shabbat.” Sponsorships and tickets are available. Please visit our website or call or email Beth at

SUKKOT IN JSL STYLE

Above: Fleischman residents with Rabbi Polter.

Above: Meer residents shake the lulav and show their etrog for Sukkot.

Rabbi Polter led many JSL residents in Sukkot celebrations and services. He said the blessing and then took the Etrog and Lulav around to each person individually. Many had honey cake and grape juice, enjoyed each other's company and admired the beautiful sukkahs.

IN MEMORIAM

Ellen Labes, a 2015 8 Over 80 Honoree, dedicated much of her time on behalf of older adults in our community for many decades. She had been active with the National Council of Jewish Women, Yad Ezra, Jewish Federation’s Board of Governors and was a lifetime member of the Jewish Women’s Foundation. In 2006, Ellen received one of Federation’s highest awards, the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The People of Israel

In light of the recent tragedy in Israel I bring to you the wonderment of Mark Twain on the miraculous longevity of the people of Israel.

Written by Mark Twain in Harper's, September 1899

"If the statistics are right, the Jews constitute but one percent of the human race. It suggests a nebulous dim puff of stardust lost in the blaze of the Milky Way.

Properly the Jew ought hardly to be heard of, but he is heard of, has always been heard of.

He is as prominent on the planet as any other people and his commercial importance is extravagantly out of proportion to the smallness of his bulk.

His contributions to the world's list of great names in literature, science, art, music, finance, medicine, and obtuse learning are also way out of proportion to the weakness of his numbers.

He has made a marvelous fight in this world in all the ages and has done it with his hands tied behind him.

He could be vain of himself and be excused for it. The Egyptians, the Babylonians and the Persians rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, and faded to dream stuff and passed away.

The Greeks and the Romans followed and made a vast noise and they are gone.

Other peoples have sprung up and held their torch high for a time. But it burned out, and they sit in twilight now or have vanished.

The Jew saw them all. Beat them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and aggressive mind. All things are mortal but the Jew. All other forces pass, but he remains."

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
