Georgetown's newest medical students joined their family and friends in Gaston Hall on August 4 to don their white coats for the first time, recite the Hippocratic Oath and celebrate the official start of their medical education.
With their health disparities research capstone presentations, participants in the 2023 Gateway Exploration Program drew attention to topics that concern them, including substance use disorder, childhood asthma and food insecurity, and proposed solutions to problems they’ve seen firsthand.
School of Health students immersed themselves in the Argentinian health care system as part of a six-week translational health science internship program to study the clinical effects and molecular mechanisms of viruses that cause respiratory infections in infants and children. 
People with type 2 diabetes who drank the fermented tea drink kombucha for four weeks had lower fasting blood glucose levels compared to when they consumed a similar-tasting placebo beverage, according to results from a clinical trial conducted by researchers at Georgetown’s School of Health, MedStar Health, and other colleagues.

Membership in the GUMC Teaching Academy for Health Sciences is open to all faculty (part-time, full-time and adjunct) at GUMC and MedStar Health with academic appointments at GUMC. Support the fight to end cancer by lending your time as a medical volunteer during BellRinger Weekend, October 20-21. Anyone with a BLS certification or above can sign up to help provide basic first aid to support riders across the finish line. Register as a medical volunteer.
The DC Public Health Case Challenge aims to promote interdisciplinary, problem-based learning around a public health issue that faces the local Washington, DC community. The case competition will take place October 6 at the National Academy of Sciences Building. If you are interested in representing Georgetown in the case competition, apply here by August 18.
