Student Highlights: Grace
Each month we will be highlighting an ASOP student who has an interesting outside activity.
Grace is a boxer!
For the past two years, Grace has immersed herself in learning to box. It started with an interest in watching boxing on television.
"I enjoyed watching," Grace said. " I decided to try it. I have done a lot of sports. And I thought, 'you know what, you only live once. So do it!'"
Grace usually goes three days a week to Leo Moreno Junior Boxing Club in Overland Park. Each time she starts with conditioning, which includes foot work, hitting the bag and other exercises. Then she spars with someone about the same height and weight. When she spars, Grace wears a helmet, mouth guard and gloves.
"My stepdad really encouraged me to try boxing. He thought I would meet new people and learn to protect myself," Grace said.
She loves it! "Honestly," she said, "I like everything about it. It is a unique art. I like being able to take all my adrenaline that's inside and boxed up and unleash it once I get to practice or into the ring. Instead of sitting on the sidelines and being scared to participate, I like putting myself out there and pushing myself to the fullest."
