Thriving Communities FY2023 NOFO 


USDOT is now accepting applications for its FY2023 Thriving Communities Program (TCP) which provides up to $22 million in funding for Capacity Builders to provide technical assistance, planning, and capacity building support to disadvantaged and under-resourced communities across the U.S.


In addition, local, tribal, and regional governments along with their community partners are invited to submit a Letter of Interest to receive two years of no-cost technical assistance as well as three years of facilitated peer learning opportunities.

NHI Online Training

Basic Relocation Under the Uniform Act


The National Highway Institute (NHI) is hosting two Relocation Program web-based training courses on Relocation Under the Uniform Act. These courses aim to build proficiency in understanding and implementing the Uniform Relocation Assistance & Real Property Acquisition Policies Act (Uniform Act) Relocation Program and 49 CFR 24 requirements.


Courses Offered Include:


Fall Series: runs October 2 - 20, 2023


Winter Series: runs December 5–12, 2023


These courses are ideal for professionals who provide relocation assistance to nonresidential entities that are being displaced by a federal-aid project.

Highway Damage Recovery

Using GIS, LiDAR, & UAS


On September 20, 2023, the Caltrans Division of Research, Innovation & System Information (DRISI) hosted a presentation on highway damage recovery as part of their webinar series "DRISI Presents".


The presentation illustrated how Caltrans North Region used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in conjunction with Light Detection & Ranging (LiDAR) and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for state highway damage recovery efforts.


Presenters Aaron Ott and Chad Baker describe the years of work state DOTs engage in after major disasters, including pavement rehabilitation, hazardous tree removal, and landslides.

Road Safety Champion Program


The National Center for Rural Road Safety (NCRRS) announced its latest Road Safety Champion Program (RSCP), a nationally recognized certificate program designed to build a knowledgeable, safety minded workforce responsible for operating, maintaining, and designing local roads.


"Road Safety Champions" prioritize safety and are motivated to implement safety improvements that reduce fatalities and serious injuries on rural and local roadways.


Starting September 21, NCRRS is hosting a 7-part online training that covers RSCP's core modules. Each 2-hour session is free to attend and completion of all seven core modules is required to receive an RSCP certificate.

FY2024 Tribal Transportation Program

Safety Funds NOFO Webinar

October 3, 2023, 2:00pm to 3:30pm ET


FHWA is hosting an informational webinar on the 2024 Tribal Transportation Program Safety Fund on Tuesday, October 3rd. This webinar will review the FY2024 TTP Safety Funds NOFO for prospective applicants.


The application period for this program is from October 1, 2023 through January 15, 2024.


Eligible Activities for Grant Funding Include:


  • Development & update of transportation safety plans
  • Data assessment, improvement, and analysis
  • Systemic Roadway Departure Countermeasures
  • Infrastructure Improvements

NCHRP Research Report

Guide for Roundabouts


The Transportation Research Board's (TRB) National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) has released their Guide for Roundabouts to provide information and guidance on all aspects of roundabouts.


Roundabout implementation in the U.S. has increased in the last decade, and practitioners have learned lessons in successfully applying roundabouts in various land use and transportation environments and contexts.


Supplemental to this report is NCHRP web document Background & Summary of a Guide for Roundabouts which describes the research for and development of the roundabouts research report.
