Safety Tips for Students
As students return to their classrooms this fall, the American Red Cross offers seven ways to help ensure your child practices safety awareness on and off school grounds.
- For children riding a bus to school: they should plan to get to their bus stop early and stand away from the curb while waiting for the bus to arrive.
- Students should board the bus only after it has come to a complete stop and the driver or attendant has instructed them to get on. Make sure they know their bus number. They should only board their bus, never an alternate one, unless notification of a change has been made.
- All students should stay in clear view of the bus driver and never walk behind the bus.
- For children walking to school: they should only cross the street at an intersection, and when possible, use a route that has crossing guards.
- Teach your child not to run out into the street or cross between parked cars.
- For children driven to school: they should always buckle up. Younger children should be in approved car seats or booster seats until the lap-shoulder belt fits properly (typically for children ages 8-12 and over 4’9”), and ride in the back seat until they are at least 13 years old.
- For teenagers driving to school: mandate the use of seat belts, forbid the use of cell phones. As a good safety practice, avoid other distractions, such as eating or drinking while driving.
TAKE A FIRST AID CLASS
For children over the age of 10, have them learn and practice first aid and CPR skills by taking a first aid course. They may help save a life!
Download the FREE Red Cross First Aid App for instant access to information on handling the most common first aid emergencies. Find the App by searching for ‘American Red Cross’ in your app store or at redcross.org/apps.

Catholic Charities Diaper Bank
National Diaper Awareness Week - September 18-24
One in two U.S. families struggles to provide enough diapers to keep a baby or toddler clean, dry, and healthy. 3 in 5 parents miss work or school because they can’t afford the diapers required to leave their baby in childcare. By working together, we can ensure that all babies have access to clean diapers and other basic necessities required for them to thrive and reach their full potential.
Clean diapers are a basic need of every baby and toddler.
The Catholic Charities Diaper Bank is currently helping over 200 families.
We invite you to get involved! Catholic Charities Diaper Bank provides diaper distributions to families in need with children ages 3 and under.
We accept donations of diapers, hygiene items, cash and gift cards at all Catholic Charities locations Mon-Fri 9am-4pm. For more information, click here. For the location closest to you, click here.

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT
Meet Tom Who Benefitted from Casa San Francisco Assistance
| |
Tom*, a 32-year-old man, was laid off from his job and, as a result, lost his home. Homeless for the first time in his life, he came to Catholic Charities Casa San Francisco.
Our case manager helped him to enroll in computer networking classes at a local college, and funding reserved for transportation gave him a way to get to and from classes. As he continued his education, our case management support enabled Tom to identify and secure affordable rental housing in the community.
