Cost Effective Solutions
for Improving Our Wastewater System
The City of Sandy established the Manhole Rehabilitation Program to repair the manholes in our wastewater system, effectively leveraging ratepayer dollars to help keep groundwater out of our wastewater pipes to minimize excess flows at the treatment plant.

It's one of the most cost effective tools we have at our disposal to reduce the demand on the system as we continue to make upgrades and modernize our wastewater infrastructure under Sandy Clean Waters
Under the Manhole Rehabilitation Program, we have inspected about 1,200 manholes throughout the city. After identifying those in need of repair, crews apply specialized grout to specific areas where infiltration is occurring. Particular attention is paid to the inlet and outlet pipe collars, and connection joints of each barrel and cone section. In some cases, a full bench rebuild is required due to years of wastewater flow eroding the channel. This ensures a thorough repair and prevents future infiltration. In more complex situations, chemical injection grouting is used as crews drill holes near areas of leakage and inject grout into the soil behind the manhole wall, creating a watertight barrier. The drilled holes are then sealed with cement compounds.

Over 300 of the highest priority manhole repairs have already been completed under this program, with more to come. Please visit our website for much more information on the Sandy Clean Waters wastewater system improvement program.

Join the Transit Advisory Board
Are you passionate about transit issues? Do you have a desire to get involved and help improve our community? We have the perfect opportunity for you! The City of Sandy currently has two vacancies on the Transit Advisory Board (TAB), and you can apply to join us today!

The Transit Advisory Board meets quarterly to assess Sandy's transit needs and discuss ways to spread the word about the benefits of public transportation and our world class transit system, Sandy Area Metro (SAM). The board also provides valuable input to ensure that transit remains equitable and accessible for all.

Currently SAM is in the process of creating new routes, securing state and federal grant funding for projects, and electrifying our fleet. There are also opportunities to attend annual conferences within the state and gain knowledge on the latest trends in public transit. It's an exciting time to be a TAB member!

If joining the TAB intrigues you and you want to look before you take the leap, our next meeting is September 21st from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Operations Center, located at 16610 Champion Way.
Staying Prepared for Power Outages
During Fire Season
As we experience longer and hotter summers, the danger of wildfire in our area is increasing. But beyond the immediate concerns about fire itself, residents should also be aware of the increasing likelihood of summer safety-related power outages.

Portland General Electric has put together a list of steps we can all take to make outages easer to manage:

Stay in the Know
Update your email address and phone number with PGE online, on the PGE app, or by calling PGE so they can send you notices in the event of a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS).

Create a Summer Outage Kit
Summer outages are different than winter outages. Plan for household needs and gather what you’ll need to stay cool, fed and hydrated. Below are a few basic items, and you'll find a more robust checklist for a PSPS here.

  • Flashlights or headlamps

  • Battery- or hand-powered radio and fans

  • Extra batteries

  • Car chargers for cell phones and electronic devices

  • Bottled water for people and animals (if you rely on electricity to pump water)

  • Frozen cold packs or water frozen in bags or plastic bottles (keep ready in your freezer)

  • Emergency phone numbers, including PGE Customer Service: 503-228-6322

Make a Plan
The outage kit checklist also has a planning checklist on the back, but you can start here for the basics:

  • Plan ahead to relocate with a friend, family member or to a shelter, especially if you have a medical condition that requires electricity or you work or learn from home

  • Always keep ice packs in your freezer to keep food cold until you can get ice

  • Plan for feeding and watering pets or livestock, if well pumps don't have power

  • Consider buying a backup generator and follow manufacturers' guidelines for its safe operation

  • Plan your wildfire evacuation route if needed (see your county's evacuation guide)

  • Create a line of defense around your home

It's Time for Busy Bugs!
You know they can bite and buzz in your ears, but what else do you know?

Kids can get an up-close look at mosquitoes with Rick Reynolds, author of the Mosquitula books. Look at larvae under magnification, get free books and other fun stuff, play the "Fight the Bites!" game, and go on a bug-friendly scavenger hunt!

Through hands-on activities and fun lessons, the Busy Bugs program empowers young entomologists to discover the unique characteristics and behaviors of mosquitos. Kids will learn about the mosquito life cycle and how to safely live with them.

  • Wednesday, August 30, 2:00 p.m. - Meinig Park Gazebo

  • Thursday, August 31, 2:00 p.m. - Hoodland Public Library
