D4 Youth Highlight • Kasey Cheung | | San Jose is full of bright teens, each bringing a unique skillset to the table, transforming potential into progress. In the city where innovation meets inspiration, every small contribution means something great. Meet Kasey Cheung, a senior in Independence High School and an Incoming Freshman at UC Los Angeles. Throughout her high school years, she has contributed significantly to her community through various leadership roles and community-oriented services. She currently serves as the Vice-Chair of D4YAC and as a Mattel Youth Ambassador for UCLA’s children’s hospital. Cheung knows the value in supporting her community in any way possible. Reflecting on her high school journey, Cheung shares, “The experience that I hold dear to me is serving as president of the UNICEF Club at [my] High School.” Cheung’s club has organized numerous service events and benefit shows; with each new event, she has nurtured a profound love for her community. From gathering school supplies for international donation drives to volunteering at the Silicon Valley Pride festival, she has witnessed the power of youth and collective action. These experiences have filled her with pride and motivation to make a positive difference in her community and beyond. Helping the community not only allows one to connect with others, but allows them to grow as a person. Being a part of D4YAC, has provided Invaluable opportunities for personal-growth, which, to Cheung, “is the most rewarding aspect of this experience.” Connecting with like-minded, passionate youth committed to serving their community has been a transformative lesson. Whether it’s attending big events like the Youth Budget Summit or participating in smaller bi-weekly meetings focused on community initiatives, each experience has contributed to her development. Such experiences have instilled in her a “deep-rooted commitment to civic engagement and a desire to continue advocating for positive change,” states Cheung. In the future, she hopes to engage more youth by helping them step out of their comfort zone, especially in a big world where it seems like youth’s opinions don't matter. “It's easy to feel like a small voice in such a big world, but when we truly understand the significance and potential of each individual's contribution, we can truly achieve great things together” says Cheung. Cheung encourages youth to take small steps that align with their values as these small steps pave the way for substantial positive impact in the future. Cheung herself took that first step by joining her high school's UNICEF club during her freshman year; she now aspires to serve on the UNICEF National Council as an undergraduate in college. As they all say, “the hardest part of getting involved is just taking the first step!”

We're Electrifying Yard Work
Gas powered leaf blowers are a concern because of their effect on the environment and the loud noise they generate. As the state phases out the availability of new gas powered leaf blowers, San Jose is going to provide an incentive for landscape companies to upgrade to electric leaf blowers. I'm excited that I was able to add this incentive to San Jose Clean Energy's roadmap.

The City of San José Department of Transportation is conducting a survey to get your thoughts on traveling in and around North San José. What we learn will help us decide how to improve roads and paths for people who walk, bike, drive, and take transit. Participate in the survey to shape future travel in North San José! Submit your answers by Friday, May 31. Respond to the survey in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, or Chinese at bit.ly/connect-nsj. | BioBlitz • Become a Community Scientist |
Along our creeks and in our parks live a huge variety of wildlife, from water bugs to birds, snakes to elk. We look for all of them at a BioBlitz. Essentially, we play Pokemon, but we seek out nature. iNaturalist, a mobile phone app, is the tool that we use to record our observations and share them with scientists. Also, on the iNaturalist website, you can search for and learn more about nature around the world.
See what we've found in the South Bay, along with other events conducted by our partner BioBlitz.club.

If you are a residential building owner in San José, you could be eligible for thousands of dollars in incentives. The City of San José is offering incentives to single-family and multifamily households in San José to electrify their homes. Incentives are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Electric Homes San José, a City of San José program utilizing BlocPower services, supports single-family and multifamily building-owners throughout San José seeking to complete all-electric upgrades on their building and supports electrification workforce development for local contractors. The program is currently funded to support 250 building electrification measures in San José, however, additional funding for future measures is anticipated.
San José and BlocPower established a Community Advisory Board (CAB) comprised of roughly 15 representatives from Community-Based Organizations serving San José’s diverse communities. The CAB promotes community engagement and participation on the design and implementation of the program, including community outreach.
This comprehensive electrification upgrade program is expected to include the following services:
- Identify and acquire existing resources and incentives to reduce or eliminate electrification upgrade costs,
- Help assess your specific upgrade needs and costs,
- Provide contractor resources to complete approved electrification upgrade projects, and
- Coordinate workforce development training for 50 local contractors
