Last week we had our annual Public Safety Award ceremony. It was very well attended. While Sheriff TK Waters could not make the meeting to present the awards, former Sheriff and now Congressman John Rutherford gave the opening remarks and gave out the awards.
Here are this year's SBMC Public Safety Officer recipients. Each recipient received the recognition of their peers, the SBMC members and guests plus a check of $500 from SBMC.

1. JFRD Captain Harry Hutchens 2023 Paramedic of the Year - On April 24th, 2023, Paramedic Hutchens played a vital role in safely delivering twins, a boy and a girl. The baby girl had breathing issues, and the baby boy was born with his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. Both babies and their mother overcome these challenges under Hutchens' expert care.
2. JFRD Engineer Logan Lane 2023 Firefighter of the Year - Responding to a downtown District 11 house fire on December 23rd, 2022, Lane showcased exceptional bravery. Despite heavy smoke and flames, he rescued Lieutenant Tyler Phillips, dislodged by water streams. Lane's swift actions amid hazardous conditions saved Phillips' life, earning him the JFRD Firefighter of the Year accolade.
3. JSO Officer Carl C. Witt 2023 Police Office of the Year - Honored as the 2022 Police Officer of the Year, Witt demonstrated remarkable attentiveness. His role in the real-time crime center supported the launch of the Connect Duval program. He proved pivotal in solving a shooting case through surveillance footage and witness interviews, even uncovering an armed sexual battery. Witt's dedication and diligence earned him this prestigious recognition.
4. JSO Correctional Officer Reshawn Roberts 2023 Corrections Officer of the Year - Transitioning into a police officer role, Roberts volunteered to respond to an assistance call in the jail in 2022. His proactive approach led to the discovery of contraband, including homemade weapons, cocaine, and a concealed metal object, during a thorough search of cells and inmates. Roberts' dedication and vigilance earned him the Officer of the Year distinction.
On behalf of SBMC, I want to give special thanks to Bob Asher and his committee for putting on this event. His committee's efforts year after year have made it possible to honor our first responders as they should be. Thank you!
