Young Track and Field Athletes Compete at Mahopac High School

At the same time that voters were filing into the Mahopac High School gymnasium for the 2024 School Budget Vote and School Board Election, some of the youngest track and field athletes in Mahopac were taking to the Mahopac High School track for the interschool competition event of the year.

The stands were filled with students, staff, and community members wearing shirts that formed a tricolor representation of each of Mahopac’s elementary schools: yellow for Lakeview, blue for Fulmar Road, and black for Austin Road. As students took their marks for the first events, the crowd roared in support.

When asked about her events, Fulmar Road Elementary student Emma said, “It’s a lot of fun. I like competing and running, but I also really like cheering on my friends from the other schools.”

The fifth-grade future track and field stars had spent weeks preparing for the event, attending early morning practices under the tutelage of Mahopac’s Physical Education teachers. Students worked together, bonding and driving each other to lower times and longer distances in the morning practices, and they finally got a chance to show the Mahopac Community what they had been training for.

“It feels really good to finally be out here on the track,” said Lakeview student Mary Kate. “We’ve been preparing for a while on the grass. My teammates were great in the baton medley race, they gave me a great head start!”

After hours of competition, students boarded their buses and began the trip back to their respective elementary schools. Many of the fifth-grade students got their first taste of track and field events this spring and have developed an interest in pursuing track and field next year at Mahopac Middle School.

“I was so excited to be out here, but I also felt ready,” said Austin Road fifth-grade student Jacob. “We’ve been working for a while and I had so much fun at the javelin and frisbee throw. I think I might run the 100 meter race in middle school.”

Mahopac Eighth-Grade Students Visit Mahopac High School for Springfest

Not content to let poor weather get in the way of Springfest, Mahopac High School’s blue and gold gyms filled with dozens of booths manned by representatives from MHS’s many clubs on Thursday.

The day began with an assembly for Mahopac Middle School’s eighth-grade class in which they heard from a familiar face. Mahopac Middle School’s former assistant principal, Patrick Keevins, greeted students he hadn’t seen since taking over as principal of the high school in December of 2023. Keevins reintroduced himself and expressed his excitement that the students he’d already known for almost three years would be joining him at the high school in just a few months.

“I’m really excited to reconnect with them, having just left them in December,” said Keevins. “This is a great chance for the eighth graders to see all of the incredible opportunities that will be available to them when they come to the high school next year and to interact with current high schoolers.”

The eighth graders were eager to speak with the high school students about all of the incredible clubs available at the high school. Science National Honor Society, GlamourGals, Students Against Cancer, and many other clubs were present and answered the soon-to-be freshmen’s questions.

Lakeview Elementary School Comes Together for Charity at Stuff the Bus Event

Despite a rainy day last week, the entire Lakeview student body came together to share much-needed food donations with those in need. Raise Craze is an annual Spring Lakeview charity event that involves raising money through donations, hundreds of acts of kindness, and the Stuff the Bus event, in which every student in the school is invited to bring in and donate non-perishable food items. Each class hand delivered their donations to bags, which were loaded onto a school bus and taken down to Saint John’s Food Pantry.
