Fireflies (aka “lightning bugs”) live in Iowa year-round! What do you really know about these mysterious sparks of light? They are not just magical glittering displays!
There is no better way to relieve stress and get an attitude adjustment than spending time by a lake. But it’s hard to enjoy a lake if it’s choked with toxic blue-green algae. Cleaning up Iowa lakes so we can enjoy them will require some shifts in our attitudes.

Longhorn bees have emerged! These bees belong to the tribe “Eucerini”, meaning “true horned”. Male longhorns have long antennae, and sometimes sleep together inside flowers! The females have normal antennae and can look similar to honey bees. Female longhorns look chunky and have fluffy back legs, while honey bees have smooth legs. Many longhorn bees rely on native sunflowers, so include them in your future garden plans!
