I-10 westbound traffic near I-12 to move to new overpass on Wednesday

Baton Rouge - Baton Rouge traffic on Interstate 10 westbound near Interstate 12 will shift to a new overpass on Wednesday, April 24, as crews continue to make progress on the Department of Transportation and Development’s College Flyover project.

The slight shift to the right will happen at 5 a.m. Wednesday and will begin just west of the I-12 eastbound exit from I-10 westbound. Construction crews will complete all barrier placements and temporary road markings during an April 23 overnight right-lane closure on I-10 westbound from Essen Lane to College Drive. That lane closure begins at 9 p.m. Tuesday and ends at 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The new overpass is adjacent to the existing overpass that crosses over I-12 eastbound near the I-10 and I-12 merge. After I-10 westbound traffic is moved to the new structure, crews can begin preparing the existing overpass for demolition. Then, the new overpass will be widened to accommodate a separate exit lane for College Drive.

That demolition work is tentatively scheduled for mid-May and will require an overnight closure of I-12 eastbound.

When the project is finished, I-12 westbound will be reconfigured to pass beneath the new overpass, adjacent to I-12 eastbound traffic. A separate College Drive exit lane for I-12 westbound will merge with the I-10 westbound College Drive exit lane to form a new exit ramp that will be separated from I-10 traffic.
