The Friday Group meets most Fridays at 3 pm Eastern Time over Zoom. It is hosted and moderated by Sheila Markin Nielsen, a former Assistant US Attorney who was a criminal prosecutor in both state and then federal court and writes The Markin Report, a political blog with a reach of over 1.6 million with this tagline: "On the right side of history, the left side of politics, making sense of a world turned upside down".
Trump and Trumpism is a movement in America today that, if successful, would turn our country into a dictatorship. Friday Group participants are deeply concerned about that. The Friday Group has a few goals.
- Educating ourselves about groups and people who are working to keep our democracy intact and move our country in a more progressive direction.
- Staying energized for the 2024 election cycle.
- Supporting groups and individuals who are working to help our country become a more vibrant and fair-minded multicultural democracy.
Anyone who cares about protecting our democracy is welcome to come to meetings, hear from guest speakers about what their groups are doing, what they are doing, ask questions and join the discussion. Most Friday Group members are donors, activists, and foot soldiers (who canvass and text voters).
Recent past speakers include Michael Fanone, Katie Porter, Katie Hobbs, David Brock, Angelo Carusone (Media Matters), Ben Wikler (WisDems) and Simon Rosenberg (Hopium Chronicles). Upcoming guest speakers will include David Hogg (Parkland shooting), Ryan Busse (Giffords PAC) and Heather Cox Richardson and more lined up through end of 2023. Meetings are not recorded to allow everyone to speak freely and honestly. The Friday Group is like going to a master class in politics led by the people who are in the room where it happens.
