1. Why did you choose UC San Diego?

I love the location and environment that UCSD has! There Is so much to do on or off campus, whether that's exploring the coast or studying somewhere on-campus. There are a lot of beautiful spots and fun things to do in the area.

2. What advice do you have for incoming Native college students?

I'm absolutely not the first person to say this, but getting involved is so important! There are so many different ways you can do that whether it's through joining a club that relates to your studies or something related to your hobbies. There's a lot of people at UCSD and finding people with the same interests as you can definitely help you feel at home here.

3. What do you like to do for fun?

In my free time I really enjoy baking! I'm always down to try a new recipe or just recreate an old favorite. I enjoy being creative in general, some of my favorite things to do are jewelry making, painting, or clay sculpting. I also play two instruments! I play alto sax in a student ensemble on campus and also the bassoon.

What We've Been Up To

On August 8th, 2023, a Farewell Celebration was held in Dr. Elena Hood's honor. Native students, staff, and community members came together with the Department of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) to commemorate Elena's last day at UCSD. She was gifted an Eighth Generation blanket by the Native American Triton Community and a plaque with UCSD goodies by EDI. Those that wanted to speak about Elena's impact were given a chance to share their kind words.

Dr. Hood was the inaugural Director for the Intertribal Resource Center and has done tremendous work in the field of Native American Education. We are sad to see her go, but excited to see where her position as faculty at Palomar College takes her! Thank you for everything, Elena!

On August 7th, 2023, the ITRC hosted the Aguilera family for a UC San Diego campus visit. Before the "Native Tour," ITRC staff treated our visitors to lunch. They then visited different spots on campus and explained the history of each one, including Sun God Lawn, shown above.
