Join Us - D10 Meetings

Environment Committee Meeting - next Wed., July 5, 6pm
Hybrid on Zoom and at the Como Streetcar Station (1224 Lexington Pkwy)
The Environment Committee typically meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 6 pm. All D10 Como Park meetings are open to the public and have space for community members to bring topics for discussion.
Next week, we will have a presentation by Molly Burns-Hansen, the program coordinator at Move Minnesota (movemn.org), the Transportation Management Organization (TMO) for the City of Saint Paul. Molly’s presentation will cover some of the many ways this organization supports our community by promoting new modes of transportation that protect the environment and counter the effects of climate change. She will also review programs available for employers, small businesses, new developments, residents of multi-unit buildings, and our Como Park neighbors.

Neighborhood Relations Committee Meeting - Wed., July 5th, 7:15pm

Hybrid on Zoom and at the Como Streetcar Station (1224 Lexington Pkwy)

The Neighborhood Relations Committee typically meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 7:15pm. All D10 Como Park meetings are open to the public and have space for community members to bring topics for discussion.

Next week we'll be finalizing plans for the Ice Cream Social (July 14), and hearing an update about the Como Neighborhood History Project. Now is a great time to jump into the conversation with us!

Link to Agenda and Meeting

The Ice Cream Social is coming July 14th!

Every year, the D10 Neighborhood Relations Committee plans our Ice Cream Social, featuring free ice cream, live music, meet-and-greets with neighborhood organizations, and activities for children and families.

The event is at the Historic Streetcar Station in Como Park, 1224 Lexington Pkwy N. Because parking is limited, we encourage community members to walk, bike, roll, carpool, or take public transportation. Bring your neighbors!

New this year – the Como Community Council will be collecting donations for the Booth Brown House Youth Shelter.

The items below will be collected at the Booth Brown House table at the event, or can be dropped off at the shelter (1471 Como Ave) before or after the event. If you’d like to make a financial donation, you can do so HERE (when you enter a Como address, your donation will automatically be routed to the Booth Brown House location – otherwise note that it’s for the Booth Brown House).

The Saint Paullinators have set work days to keep the Orchard Rec Center Community Pollinator Garden looking its best. Join us on Sunday mornings through the summer to lay mulch, pull weeds and replant. Contact organizer@district10comopark.org for more information.

Weigh In: Pickleball Court Conversion at Orchard Rec

The city has shared plans for a project to convert the two tennis courts at Orchard Rec Center (875 Orchard Ave) into three dedicated pickleball courts later this year.

The scope of work for the project includes conversion of tennis courts to dedicated pickleball courts, retaining wall repair (pending structural review), additional court amenities, and site furnishing updates.

The city is looking for feedback before the end of June. Please express your support for pickleball or concern for the change by reaching out to Max Sell with St. Paul Parks and Recreation: ph: 651.266.6487 or email Max.Sell@ci.stpaul.mn.us.

You can visit the city's Athletic Courts Project Page for more information and updates. Please share this info with anyone you know who uses (or would use) the courts.

Summer Pest Control: Japanese Beetles

if you live in the Twin Cities Metro Area, Extension entomologist Vera Krishik and her team need your help. This summer, they’ll be looking for Japanese beetle grubs to collect in June, and again in August through October. They already began collecting from some locations in May.

In Minnesota, Japanese beetle grubs grow underground most of the year until they emerge in late June – just in time to wreak havoc on your roses, basil, fruiting plants and practically anything else in your garden. Collecting the grubs is part of a larger research effort to eradicate Japanese beetle from Minnesota, eventually.

Stay Cool In the Heat

As the weather heats up, keep in mind these tips to stay cool in the heat:

  • Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink more. Water is better at cooling your body than drinks with sugar.
  • Use sunscreen.
  • Limit outdoor activity, especially midday when the sun is hottest.
  • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.

During extreme heat, check on relatives, neighbors, older adults and other vulnerable community members to ensure they are staying cool and hydrated. Those at highest risk include people 65 and older, children younger than two, and people with chronic diseases or mental illness.
