Stallmann receives Michigan 4-H State Award
Avery Stallmann, a 4-H member from the Ray Community 4-H Club in Macomb County, was selected as the winner of the 2023 Michigan 4-H State Award in the Junior Division for Career Development. The Michigan 4-H State Awards Program took place June 21, 2023 during 4-H Exploration Days at Michigan State University.

The Michigan 4-H State Award is the highest honor bestowed on Michigan 4-H members. The Michigan 4-H State Awards Program is an opportunity for 4-H members to receive recognition while developing their leadership skills and personal portfolio. The program features a Junior and Senior division in 20 project areas as well as a group award category. To enter the competition, 4-H members submitted an application that included a cover letter, resume, 4-H story and questions that highlight the life skills, project content knowledge, leadership development, and civic engagement experiences that the 4-H members gained through their 4-H projects. Applications were scored, and up to twelve finalists in the Junior, Senior, and Group divisions for each project area were invited to represent their county in the statewide competition.

Senior finalists advanced to further competition where they completed a video conference interview with the selection committee. This year, 22 youth representing 15 counties applied for a 4-H State Award.

Avery Stallmann has been a 4-H member for nine years. In addition to the career development project, Avery participates in culinary arts, creative writing, community service, expressive arts, photography, and veterinary science. Avery serves as treasurer for the Ray Community 4-H Club and the Macomb County 4-H Youth Council. Avery’s favorite 4-H memory was attending Exploration Days at MSU with her friends. Avery believes 4-H has helped her prepare for pursuing a career as a veterinarian where she hopes to attend Michigan State University to study biology and earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree.

The Michigan 4-H State Awards Program is open to all 4-H members ages 13-19. For more information, visit https://www.canr.msu.edu/4_h_scholarships_and_recognition_program/4-h-awards-and-recognition-program/youth-recognition. To learn more about Michigan 4-H Youth Development, contact your local MSU Extension office or visit the Michigan 4-H website.

Youth learn about woodworking at the Macomb County 4-H Youth Council's 4-H Woodworking Workshop
This past month, on June 16th, the Macomb County 4-H Youth Council hosted a countywide woodworking event at the MSU Extension Office. Over 20 cloverbuds and youth participated. They built an adjustable toy robot made out of wooden blocks. The clovers assembled pre-cut blocks for their robots, while the older youth cut their own wood blocks and learned how to use different woodworking tools, such as a radial arm saw, table saw, and drill. Overall, it was a fun way for the participants to gain knowledge in the project area of woodworking!

Going home: Biosecurity tips for animals that went to the county fair
Michigan State University Extension offers these biosecurity steps exhibitors can take to protect their show animals and those that were left at home after the fair has ended.

  • Keep animals that were at the fair separate from animals that were not for 28-30 days. If at all possible, do not allow nose-to-nose contact and provide as much distance between animals.

  • Disinfect all buckets, feeders, tools and footwear that was at the fair.

  • Throw away any feed or hay that was at the fair.

  • Always wear clean clothes and footwear. Boot coverings may be helpful when caring for animals.

  • Take care of animals that stayed home from the show first, and animals that were at the show second. Do not go back and forth between animals as this increases the risk of cross-contamination.

  • Do not eat or drink in the barn.

  • Observe animals daily for signs and symptoms of illness, such as:

  • Obvious pain or discomfort
  • Decrease in appetite and water intake
  • Fever
  • Lethargy
  • Diarrhea or changes in consistency in manure
  • Discharge from nasal cavity or eyes
  • Overall weakness

Care of animals after the fair is just as critical as their before-fair care. Exhibited animals were exposed to new animal populations and fair goers, and most likely experienced a lot of stress during their time away from the farm. By practicing these biosecurity steps, you can help keep all of your animals safe and healthy.
