How I Start Abstract Painting & Collage, Part Two

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

This BobBlast is Part Two of a very popular subject I teach—Abstract Acrylic Painting and Collage. Part One dealt with paper collage, gel adhesive and my intentions, written in my sketch book. The Demo in Part One was about establishing the composition with the collage papers. Let the acrylic gel medium dry—then it is time to add color!

Before I start painting, I review my notes, study the collage and select my color combination… four colors from my Goof-Proof Color Wheel plus black and white.

I do some stretching exercises before painting—I swing my arms and hands around and breathe deeply. I also turn on music! This helps me paint looser with more determination.

Remember, these are small warmup paintings. Don’t paint just one—start a series, using the same concept and intention. Use a different composition and color combination. I do not say a painting is done after the “first pass”. I put it on the wall and look at it. When the painting matches the title, then it’s done!

This is how I start working on a new batch of small abstracts:

•Same style

•Different color combos

•All “what if” warmups… what if I try this?
