A Message from the Executive Director of the Florida Chamber Safety Council, Jason Mozo, J.D.
With recent events and an ever-rising number of active shooter incidents across America, it is imperative for every employer to have a plan and for their employees to know what to do in the event of an active shooter. In 2020, the FBI designated 40 shootings as active shooter incidents with that number increasing by 52.5% to 61 incidents in 2021, four of which occurred in Florida.

Attendees will learn how to recognize behavior signs of a potential active shooter, be prepared if an incident happens and what to do if one occurs in your workplace. Providing active shooter training gives employees the knowledge, skills and confidence to use if they are ever in an active shooter situation. This course will provide engaging, professional active assailant, and threat management training that can be used in and outside the workplace.

This month of April, we are offering savings of up to 20% off our Heat Stress Prevention training class for the month of April. All you need to do is schedule this training class within the next 90 days of April to receive this discount. OSHA announced a National Emphasis Program (NEP) last year on April 8th, 2022 on Heat Stress Prevention to protect employees from heat-related hazards and resulting injuries and illnesses in outdoor and indoor workplaces. You can review the NEP here: flchm.co/418l0aH. According to OSHA, most outdoor fatalities, 50% to 70%, occur in the first few days of working in warm or hot environments because the body needs to build a tolerance to the heat gradually over time. The process of building tolerance is called heat acclimatization. Lack of acclimatization represents a major risk factor for fatal outcomes. We can assist you in developing a written program for your organization on Heat Stress Prevention to help secure a safer and healthier workplace for your team members.
OSHA’s Heat Illness Prevention campaign, launched in 2011, educates employers and workers on the dangers of working in the heat. Our safety message comes down to three keywords: Water. Rest. Shade. The key to preventing excessive heat stress is knowing the hazards of working in heat and the benefits of implementing proper controls and work practices.
Our mission to create the safest, healthiest, and most sustainable workforce in America starts with partnering with small to mid-size Florida companies committed to their employee’s health and safety while striving to create an accident-free workplace. With a Florida Chamber Safety Council Membership at any level, you will gain access to a wealth of resources and tools and connect with your peers and other industry leaders. April 2023 Safety, Health & Sustainability Update
According to the Florida Chamber Safety Council's Florida Workplace Safety Report released in 2020:

Safety
Measuring and comparing workers’ compensation data across states is difficult. Each state has different legislation governing workers’ compensation. Reporting on worker compensation information is not consistent. Florida is one of the 38 states that produce any kind of report on workers’ compensation claims. Of the 38 states with reports some only use BLS incidence rate data, one (Minnesota) only reports 10-year changes, one (West Virginia) only reports state agency claims and one (Nevada) only reports private industry claims. Much of the data reported is out of date. Colorado’s most recent report is from 2016, while 13 states produced a report in 2017 and 22 states produced a report in 2018. Florida’s most recent report includes data for 2018. There is also a wide disparity in the specifics of the data reported. Most of the state reports focus on organizational make-up and reporting lines, as well as commissioners’ and appeals judges’ biographical information and workload. They also focus on insurance companies’ market share, fraud prevention efforts, and timeliness of the appeals process. Comparing state reports on the area of the body affected by injury shows that only 10 other states report the same body part categories as Florida.

Health
The prevalence of diabetes in the population can be an indicator of overall metabolic health. Diabetes can increase risk and delay healing in the case of a workplace injury. The CDC surveys people and asks if they have ever been diagnosed with diabetes by a health care provider. This data is then adjusted for each state based on the age demographics. The age adjusted value for Florida is 10.5 percent. Across the nation diabetes prevalence varies from 6.6 percent in Colorado to 13.5 percent in West Virginia. Florida ranks 34th lowest (17th highest) out of all 50 states in diabetes prevalence. The 10 states with the highest rates of diabetes are all in the south.

Sustainability
Air quality can be calculated by measuring particulate matter (PM). Higher levels of particles in the air are directly linked to harmful health problems. The smaller the particle, the more harmful they can become by going deep into the lungs and bloodstream. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is classified as an air pollutant and is the main cause of reduced visibility in parts of the United States. Florida has less exposure to PM2.5 compared to the national average, ranking 25th lowest in the nation.
