With an "F" in Biology looming ominously in Trevor's near future unless he finds motivation, Trevor's parents take away his video games for a week in an effort to make him buckle down and study. When he opens up his book, however, an epic adventure begins, and the greatest scientists in history become his guides-literally!

Mark Twain - How to Reform a Conscience
Tuesday, July 11th — 7:00—8:00 PM

Mark Twain - How to Reform a Conscience
Mark Twain described Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as “a book of mine where a sound heart and a deformed conscience come into collision and conscience suffers defeat.” This hour-long program considers how Twain came to recognize the way his own conscience was “deformed” with regards to racism and white supremacy, and explores the ways he successfully – and not-so-successfully – worked to reform it. Note: While this program is an excellent companion to reading Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, participants do not need to have read the book to fully engage with and learn from this program.
About the presenter: Erin Bartram is the Associate Director for Education at The Mark Twain House & Museum. She earned her Ph.D. at the University of Connecticut in 2015 and taught for three years at the University of Hartford before joining the museum. She is co-founder and editor of Contingent Magazine, and co-editor of the Rethinking Careers, Rethinking Academia series for the University Press of Kansas. Her work has appeared in the Washington Post, the Chronicle of Higher Education, Religion & American Culture, and the Journal of the Early Republic.

Once registered, the PDFs of the text that you will need to read ahead of time will be emailed to you.
About the Instructor: Jonathan English is excited to start a community group that explores a variety of educational ideas and techniques. As a former homeschooler and graduate of St. John’s College Great Books classics program, he has long had an interest in learning how to learn and how to help others along the way. He has experience teaching in public schools, private schools, and homeschool academies with all age levels and subjects.
