ACTIVE AGING

by Jo Strausz Rosen

We are not the only ones who have been drumming the point home that movement, fitness, socialization and wellness impact longevity. International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) founder and CEO Colin Milner, says, “Aging well involves more than simply programs and special events, but requires an intentional, ongoing pursuit of potential and possibilities.”

JUNE: ALZHEIMER'S AND BRAIN AWARENESS MONTH

Are you caring for someone with brain changes? The Brown Program can help you. The Dorothy and Peter Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Program is a nonsectarian program dedicated to supporting people living with dementia and their family care partners. The day program is designed to enhance the dignity, self-esteem and well-being of each participant through engaging programming and socialization, provided in a warm, safe and secure environment. In collaboration with family care partners, the Brown Center helps participants age in place by providing support and respite services to their care partners, while enhancing the participants’ quality of life. JSL is proud to partner with Gesher Human Services on the campus in West Bloomfield. For more information, contact Director Debi Banooni: 248-592-5034

AGING WITH ARLENE

by Arlene J. Frank

I used to be a dancer – all through my youth I studied ballet, tap, and modern dance, and I began my college life as a modern dance major. Even when I stopped formally dancing, I continued to go out dancing with friends. I felt light and in control of my body – strong and supple. Many years later, as I age, I find myself less in control of my body. Even as a lifelong feminist, the absurd, sexist, societal pressures and expectations of maintaining a youthful body sit menacingly on my arthritic shoulder. One morning I woke up to see my mother’s arms in the mirror and it compelled me to write these poems.

8 Over 80 in the News

We thought we couldn't be prouder of this year's 8 Over 80 Honorees and event, but we are beyond pleased that it was acknowledged by the wonderful article in this week's Detroit Jewish News.

SEE THE STORY

We invite our JSL community of readers to become writers and send in your stories for the opportunity to appear in the Shabbat Shalom Newsletter. Relevant stories about aging, volunteerism, living our best lives, inspirations, and mindfulness will be appreciated. Funny, sad, poignant, newsworthy, nonpolitical pieces are welcome. Contact nlupi@jslmi.org if you are interested.

JSL JUNE HAPPENINGS

ALL ABOUT APPRECIATION

PCA / Med Passer Week

Coville Assisted Living in Oak Park held a special luncheon, honoring staff this week. Each participant was given a "Thank you for your Awesomeness" cup and matching key chains. The staff was excited that CEO Nancy Heinrich came to join them and show her appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

FUN 'N' GAMES

Rummikub Residents

Kenneth Volk, Steven Meyers and Ilene Gittleman played several heated games of Rummikub at Meer Apartments, West Bloomfield this past week. Rummikub is a multiplayer game, with the objective to create either sets of of three tiles bearing the same figure in different colors, or sets of runs—three consecutive numbers in the same color. The first player to place all the tiles on their rack wins. The game, much like the card game Gin Rummy, is played by many residents. JSL encourages game playing to enhance memory, retain and improve math skills and, at the same time, provide engaging opportunities to socialize. A WIN WIN for all!

FUN 'N' GAMES #2

On the Campus of Oak Park, Coville Assisted Living and Memory Care introduced physical activity through games this week. Residents Gerry, Marvin, Elinor, Norma, Edward and Gloria excitedly participated in activities that provided opportunities to laugh and compete in bean bag toss, bowling and ring toss. Gillian Faust, Coville Memory Care Life Enrichment Coordinator, reported there was very positive feedback and they plan on continuing to challenge the residents in this way. A major WIN for all!

BOUTIQUE

Stretchy, Comfy and Colorful

From colorful print leggings to bright origami shirts, you can stand out from the crowd, while still feeling like you’re home in your jammies!

WRITERS AND EDITORS

FRIENDS of JSL is working with residents to create and publish a book of stories by and about the amazing folks who make up the JSL community. We’re looking for interviewers, writers, and editors who can help residents capture their stories in writing and help polish a finished draft. And we are looking for residents who would like to include a story. Pieces will be approximately 1-4 pages. For more information, call Beth Robinson at 248 569-5092 or email brobinson@jslmi.org.

FRIDAY FUNNY

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

MY INDEPENDENCE IN HONOR OF JULY 4TH

“How much longer will you need to remain at the rehab care facility?” I asked a man who suffered a leg infection for the past seven months.

“I anticipate returning home to my independence on July 4th,” he replied.

My independence” hammers home the teaching of our sages concerning the end of times. The ultimate era of lasting independence will accompany the final redemption.

Independence and redemption will not only be a collective experience but also a personal one (my independence).

The Hebrew word “Goleh” which means exile, denotes restriction. The Hebrew word “Geulah” which means redemption, denotes ultimate freedom. In the Hebrew language, these two words are opposite in nature and vary in a single letter - the letter Alef, whose corresponding numerical value is one. It takes the letter Alef which represents the One and Only Creator to transform “Goleh” - exile to “Geulah”- redemption.

Let us each experience a personal redemption and independence from our struggles and challenges.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
