Inverness E-Newsletter - August 19, 2022
Message from Mayor Jack Tatooles
During the past several months, the Chicagoland Area has been experiencing increased property crime, such as residential burglary and motor vehicle theft. Unfortunately, our community has not been immune to this trend.  The Inverness Police Department has been investigating an increase of attempted ruse burglaries and forced entry burglaries.

According to Inverness Detective Julie Ann Ferraro, criminals are regularly canvassing/surveying potential targets by visiting homes posing as utility workers, landscapers, or contractors for adjacent homes.  During these visits, the criminal is assessing the home to determine the use of cameras, alarms, and unattended homes. If you have any relevant surveillance video/photo, please email the video/photo to [email protected], along with your contact information.

Most recently, these activities have happened between the hours of 5 pm- 8 pm, with a few exceptions of incidents slightly earlier in the day.

The following are several Burglary Prevention Tips:
  • Call 911 for any suspicious activity! This includes someone coming to the door and giving you information that is out of the ordinary (we are parking our trailer on the street tomorrow. I need you to go outside).
  • Lock your windows and doors, even when you leave briefly, are outside on your property or inside your home. Keep your garage doors closed.
  • Trim shrubs and bushes to eliminate hiding spots, and never hide keys outside.
  • Consider getting a monitored alarm system with audible warnings to scare intruders away.
  • Don’t announce your vacation or trips on social media.
  • If you have a camera with audio, use the feature to answer the door without opening the door.
  • Keep your home a lived-in look if you go away for an extended period. Have someone check your residence; the police department has a vacation watch program for this reason.
  • Don’t leave anything valuable in your car; always lock the doors. Key fobs left in the car is the #1 way a vehicle is stolen.

Most important is Call 911 for ANY suspicious activity immediately! Please describe the person/vehicle as they may be parked or on foot in the neighboring area.

Reporting Coyote Sightings
The Inverness Police Department continues to field community concerns regarding coyote sightings in the residential areas. To expedite a proactive response to this concern, the Village has reached out to Coyote Management Solutions with a strong record of positive results in other metro-area communities surrounding us.

To help the specialists better understand our coyote population and patterns, residents are asked for their assistance. Residents who observe a coyote in their neighborhood should report the sighting and condition of the animal to https://coyotemanagementsolutions.com/coyote-sightings/.

Residents who have questions about the online reporting process can contact the Inverness Police Department at 847-358-7766 or [email protected].

As coyotes are wild animals, residents should never actively seek out or search for them.
Fiscal Year 2022-2023 Financial Plan
This past July, the Village Board approved the FY 2023 Financial Plan, covering May 1, 2022, to April 30, 2023. The Village’s budget calls for approximately $4.52 million of expenditures for the operation of General Government, Building Department, Police Department, and Capital Programs. The amount represents an increase of $71,500 or 1.6% compared to the prior year’s approved budget.

Similar to past years, the Village’s corporate property tax levy is based on the total expenditures of the Police Department. In November, the Village will consider the 2022 Tax Levy, payable in 2023, of $1,793,500, identical to the previous two (2) years’ levy (i.e., no increase).  In addition, to NO INCREASE in the general fund taxes that the Village levies on residents, the FY 2023 budget does not include any new taxes or fees.

As shown in the exhibit, Inverness’s real estate tax portion consists of only 7% of an average residential property tax bill. The majority of the property tax that residents pay goes to the school districts (e.g., Palatine School District 15, Township High School District 211, Barrington 220 School District, Harper College District 512, etc.) and taxing districts other than the Village of Inverness.
