NAN is excited to announce the recipients of the Building Opportunities in Out-Of-School Time (BOOST) Grant. The goal of the BOOST Grant Program is to increase the availability of high-quality Out-Of-School Time (OST) programs, promoting positive growth and development for all K-12 youth. Lights on Afterschool

Celebrate the 24th Annual Lights On Afterschool on October 26, 2023!


Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families, and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates

media coverage across the country each year.

Expanding Equity in Afterschool and Summer Learning: Lessons From School Districts

Achieving equity in education—that is, ensuring every student has the resources and tools they need to succeed—has become a key issue for the nation’s schools. Equity doesn’t apply just to classroom learning, however; it matters in afterschool, summer, and other out-of school-time (OST) programs, too. Yet while research on equity in the OST sector in general is growing, equity in OST programs provided by school systems has received less attention from researchers.

How to Foster Belonging in a Loneliness Epidemic as Youth Development Professionals

 You’ve likely seen it by now: “Loneliness is the new smoking.” The U.S. Surgeon General recently published an advisory Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation, and one of the most shocking data points from the report is that social isolation is as detrimental to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

That, coupled with the finding that today’s young people aged 15-24 have 70% less social interaction with their friends than young people did two decades ago has youth development professionals thinking hard about the ways that we build social connection and combat loneliness among youth.
