May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Riding season is about to begin for many motorcyclists, and Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month is a reminder that preventing crashes is the responsibility of all travelers.

Motorcyclists are about 22 times more likely to die in crashes than passenger vehicle travelers, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

Speeding and alcohol impairment are major factors in motorcyclist fatalities. Motorcycle helmet use is also essential to saving lives and reducing injuries. In Oregon, wearing a motorcycle helmet while riding is required. Learn more about buying and fitting U.S Department of Transportation certified motorcycle helmets.

All road users should follow these safe driving and riding practices:

  • Observe traffic laws and obey the speed limit
  • Drive and ride alcohol and drug-free
  • Avoid distractions
  • Drivers should yield to motorcyclists, especially while turning at intersections
