First-Generation College Graduate Embraces LaGuardia Experience and Enters Medical School
Attending college is an experience Marvin Campos holds close to his heart. Marvin, whose parents immigrated from Mexico to New York before he was born, graduated from LaGuardia in December 2016. Earlier this summer he began studying at New York Medical College, where he plans to graduate in 2027. “LaGuardia served as the catalyst into shaping my character as a young adult,” Marvin said. “Meeting many amazing classmates, friends and faculty played an integral role into understanding who I am as an individual, and in helping me understand how I can serve my people of NYC.” Although Marvin is a first-generation college student, he’s not the first in his family to enter the medical field or attend LaGuardia. His older brother Orlando is a LaGuardia alumnus and a nurse. Marvin first became interested in medicine at the age of seven, when his younger brother suffered from a seizure and had to go to the emergency room. Having witnessed the “profound optimism and compassion” of the physicians who took care of his brother, Marvin says he hopes to one day create a similar environment of care and compassion with his future patients.

CUNY Colleges Receive $1 Million Grant to Support Development of Wastewater-Based Epidemiology Student Training and Education Program
The National Science Foundation has provided three CUNY schools — LaGuardia Community College, Queensborough Community College, and Queens College — with a $1 million grant to develop a wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) student training and education program. In the field of WBE, researchers analyze sewage samples to gather public health insights from chemical and biological signals in pooled wastewater. LaGuardia biology professor Dr. Olga Calderón will serve as a co-Principal Investigator on the project alongside Dr. John Dennehy, a professor of biology at Queens College, and Dr. Monica Trujillo, a biology professor at Queensborough Community College. With support from the Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions program, this project aims to establish a WBE training program at CUNY to respond to declining minority student retention and graduation rates in STEM. Dr. Calderón said the team’s objective is to inspire and support community college students with career prospects in the field, by providing academic, research, and social mentoring from role models that they can identify with to improve student retention, graduation rates, and career success.
