Proper 16
Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
From the Bishop
REMINDER: Bishop Bob is currently off island through September 27. He will be in Europe for a mix of both work and family vacation with Bea. On their way home, they will attend the Episcopal Church’s House of Bishops (with spouses) meeting in the Dominican Republic. Please keep Bishop Bob and Bea in your prayers as they travel.
Happy Birthday Sonny!
On his birthday (July 27), the Bishop presented Sonny Liu with an icon of St. Bede the Venerable. Sonny is the part-time Office Assistant in the Diocesan Support Center. He often arrives in the wee hours of the morning to work on cataloging and filing. He passes on historical documents to the archives. He does research when needed, looking in the files for details on deeds, land grants, donations, and the like. St. Bede is widely regarded as the greatest of all the Anglo-Saxon scholars. He lived and died in between the twin monasteries of Wearmouth and Karrow in the North East of England between 673 and 735 CE. He wrote or translated some forty books on practically every area of knowledge, including nature, astronomy, and poetry. He also wrote the first martyrology (a chronicle about the lives of the saints) of English saints. His most famous writing is The Ecclesiastical History of the English People. St. Bede seemed to be an appropriate patron saint for our own researcher into dusty files. Sonny, happy birthday!

FEATURE STORY
Annual Clergy Conference on Kaua'i
Our clergy met in Kapa‘a (Kaua‘i) for the Annual Clergy Conference on August 21-23, 2023, at the Kaua'i Coconut Beach Resort. The conference began on a somber note with prayers for our Maui siblings. Maui clergy stayed home to be near their congregants, and the Bishop also did not attend so that he might visit with them and be a part of an ecumenical prayer vigil on Maui. READ MORE

UPDATE: LAHAINA & HOLY INNOCENTS
As officials continue their search for the hundreds still missing after the Lahaina fire, the FBI is pleading with the public to come forth with DNA samples to help with identification. The number of unaccounted for still stands at over 1,000, and it is hoped that the County will release those names soon. It is a painstaking process compounded with the loss of communication infrastructure and hundreds of people displaced.
As of this writing, 115 have been confirmed killed in the fire, with less than half identified. Sadly, among those identified is a person with connections to Holy Innocents Episcopal Church. A number of congregants have also lost everything to the fire and have temporarily relocated around the island and O'ahu.

Regional Reporter, Cindy Schumacher, wrote an article for the Lahaina News on the worship communities impacted by the fire, including Holy Innocents. To read this informative article, click HERE.

The loss of Holy Innocents and its history has been a tragic blow not just for its members and community, but for the Diocese. Support and donations from folks around the Diocese and the world (see St. John's-Guam photo further below) have been pouring in, and a special Emergency Response team from Kaua'i led by the Rev. Kerry Holder Joffrion from West Kaua'i, headed to Maui to provide services that included a doctor, nurse, vet tech, and engineer.

Along with A Cup of Cold Water (ACCW), all of the Episcopal Maui churches have reached out to help their sister church in myriad ways. This Sunday, Trinity By-the-Sea Episcopal in Kihei, has invited Holy Innocent congregants for a special service and luncheon at 9:00 AM.
The Bishop and Canon Sandy Graham have been working with Holy Innocents' leadership to discern next steps and to establish communication with members who are scattered; efforts made more difficult with records destroyed.

The iconic mural of the Hawaiian Madonna and Baby Jesus is now gone, but not forgotten. Soon, all churches in the Diocese will receive a print of the mural from the Diocesan Support Center to display in remembrance of our fallen church.

Please continue to keep all those affected in your prayers, and be sure to visit the Diocese's dedicated Maui Relief webpage HERE to stay informed or to make a donation.
Updated Donation Link
Prior to August 15, the Diocese's donation button was linked in emails to the Tithely payment platform. That has since been changed. Please disregard the links in emails dated prior to August 15, and use the current links in emails from August 15 onwards, or go to the Diocesan website. You can also go directly to the donation page HERE.
The Rev. Bruce DeGooyer to Retire
Months before the Maui fires, the Rev. Bruce DeGooyer, Vicar of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, had already made plans for his retirement that was pushed up because of health issues. Now with the tragic circumstances that have struck Lahaina and Holy Innocents, Father Bruce has delayed his retirement, and will officially remain as the Vicar through the end of September. Please keep the DeGooyers in your prayers. We will keep you posted on their future plans.
Generosity & Grace from Guam
Despite enduring their own recovery from Typhoon Mawar in June, the students at St. John's School in Guam raised over $5,000 for Maui relief efforts. From their Facebook post:

Last Friday, our Knights donned Aloha/island casual attire and collected donations in the parking lot in support of those affected by the wildfires in Maui. The united efforts of the community helped raise over $5000! We are grateful for the overwhelming response, generosity, and compassion of those who contributed!

O'AHU: Bishop's Visitation at The Cathedral
The Cathedral of St. Andrew welcomed "home" the Bishop on Sunday, August 6, 2023, for his official Visitation. The Na Ali'i Guard (top left photo) were present to process and stand guard with their Kahili. The service included Confirmations, Receptions and Reaffirmations, followed by lots of fellowship under the Aloha tent where there was even a surprise birthday for Eunice DeMello (pictured with Bishop Bob below). KAUA'I: Bishop's Visitation - Celebrating West Kaua'i-style
The Episcopal Church on West Kaua'i (ECWK) held a neighbborhood fun day celebration that timed well with the Bishop's Visitation on Sunday, August 13, 2023. While organizing an event of this magnitude would be a challenge in itself, the Rev. Kerry Holder Joffrion, Vicar, still managed to put together an Emergency Response Team that would head to Maui to help with relief efforts the next day. On the Bishop's Facebook page, he posted the following with the photos shown here:

Sometimes the Bishop’s visit is a good excuse for a party with a parade, a water slide, horse and motorcycle rides, and music on the lawn — even an adult baptism [top left photo]. Being at St. John’s Church, ‘Ele’ele (Episcopal Church on West Kaua’i), was healing and a joy. The laughter of children, the smiles and the generosity of God’s people as we commissioned a team to go to Maui, and the warmth (spiritual and physical) of Kaua’i were a personal blessing for me.

On Sept. 8, Curry will undergo surgery to remove his right adrenal gland and an attached mass. His surgeon estimates his recovery period will be two to three weeks, after which Curry is expected to resume his regular work schedule.

Curry was admitted to the hospital on Aug. 17, after a reoccurrence of the internal bleeding that required him to be hospitalized over Memorial Day weekend.
