Five Things to Know About Monica Belford

Monica Belford with her dog

By Monica Belford, Community Engagement Latino Programs

Brief Bio

I learned Spanish as a teenager living in Florida by tutoring kids and in high school. In addition to Florida, I’ve lived in California, Colorado, Georgia, Virginia (DC), and Spain. I moved to Davie county and started at DDCC in November 2021 in order to be closer to my brother, sister-in-law, niece(2), nephew(1), and dad (76)

After graduating from Wake Forest, since I had so many student loans already, I moved to Salamanca, Spain to go to grad school. There I completed a M.Ed. in Immigration and Education while interning with the Red Cross helping refugees from Africa. Then I completed all but the dissertation for a PhD. program in Spanish Grammar. I taught English and translation courses and translated and interpreted for conferences in order to pay for my college and living expenses. It was so cheap there and I loved the culture! I’ve worked with kids that crossed the border by themselves, in hospitals, teaching basic Spanish, at a library, and as an interpreter in schools.

Monica Belford's dogs

I utterly failed at online dating though, so now I only share my home and sofa with my 2 sweet dogs. Pluto is a brunette chihuahua mix with an underbite and Honey is a quiet blonde Xoloitzcuintle rescued from Guanajuato, Mexico. (She can spin her head around as if it’s not attached, so she might also be part alien.) My downstairs neighbor has Georgie, Pluto’s boyfriend.

Five Things to Know

  1. Travel: I love vacations paid for by my brother.
  2. Audiobooks: I am a fan of historical fiction and thriller audiobooks on Hoopla and Libby.
  3. Movie Memory: I loved going to the movies with my mom (and smuggling in snacks)
  4. Hobbies: I love outdoor concerts, walking my dogs, and thrift stores.
  5. Joyful Experience: I really enjoy Habitat for Humanity builds.

YuJa Quick Tip: Finding Shareable Links

By Trudy Brown

Hopefully you’ve had a chance to explore YuJa, our new video platform. As with any transition to a new platform, you may find that certain functions or buttons of the new platform aren’t where you expect them to be.

One particular feature that is very important but somewhat hard to locate if you don’t know where to look is “Links”. If you want to share a video with your class by using the video’s URL, you’ll need to get the link for it.

  • Hover over the video and then click on “More” to bring up a dialog box.
  • From the menu on the left of the dialog box, you’ll choose “Links”.
  • From here you can grab the URL to share with your classes in Moodle by clicking on the icon that looks like two pieces of paper.
