Penn Valley Homeowner Delighted with Home Repairs

Nevada County Habitat for Humanity offered a home repair grant to Habitat homeowners in February. Ten Homeowners applied and the program has been started with Penn Valley Homeowners, Joan and Tammy.

Repairs are now complete on Joan’s home, and she is delighted. â€śI am more than pleased with everything that was done to my home,” said Joan. “They did things I wasn’t expecting like a new kitchen faucet and the boards underneath the sink were replaced. The crew straightened out a post on my front porch, also. They all are so giving and go way beyond what is asked of them.”

Having help getting started has inspired Joan to move forward with additional projects on her own. â€śNow that the bathroom vanity has been replaced, my daughter and I will be painting the bathroom,” said Joan. â€śI’m going to the Restore for paint!”

Meet the NC Habitat Communications Specialist

Jamie Jo Frederick joined the Habitat staff six months ago in the role of Communications Specialist. Jamie Jo heard about Nevada County Habitat through a Habitat volunteer. She felt the Habitat position would be an opportunity to use her media and design skills to contribute to the community.

Jamie Jo studied art and communications in her home state of Indiana. Her first job out of college was supporting home builds for families displaced by Hurricane Katrina. While living in New Orleans, she also worked as a graphic designer for HBO and for the City of New Orleans.

After eight years in New York City, Jamie Jo landed in Nevada County. She searched for a place that offered a slower pace and an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. In her Habitat role, Jamie Jo works to raise awareness about Habitat’s mission by working through existing and emerging communication channels.

When not working Jamie Jo likes to hike, gather people for food, garden, and paint – especially in nature.

Money Matters

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is a U.S. government agency dedicated to making sure you are treated fairly by banks, lenders and other financial institutions. Their Website (consumerfinance.gov) has lots of resources for consumers on topics that range from helping a loved one manage their money to dealing with junk fees. Check it out!

CFPB has produced a targeted workbook titled, “Behind on bills? Start with one step.” A dozen of these are available from the Habitat office. Contact Ann Davis to request one by mail annmdavis218@gmail.com or 530-559-1042. All of CFPB’s publications available can be found online. Go here for some tips!

The Food Bank of Nevada County has nutrition resources for families who qualify, and a summer lunch program for all kids (age 2-18.) No paperwork or sign up is required for summer lunches – just show up at the specified sites at the times listed. The summer lunch program runs through August 4th.

Summer is the time to enjoy your landscaping – and keep it healthy. In summer your landscape needs water and weeding. Irrigation systems frequently need simple upkeep and repairs. Fortunately, Youtube is your friend here. Here’s a quick video on how to fix a drip line. Bald Mountain Nursery has a newsletter and tip page. You can sign up to receive their monthly newsletter on this page.
