UCSF CCMBM Core Services Newsletter - April 2024
"Biostatistical support from the CCMBM EBSD Core was a major catalyst for progress in my project. It helped me transform a concept into a compelling proposal for future research."

-- Noah Bonnheim, PhD, Postdoctoral Scholar, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, UCSF
The Skeletal Biology and Biomechanics (SBB) Core now has a new Scanco µCT50 microCT scanner at Parnassus! MicroCT uses X-ray imaging and computed tomography to produce 3D images of very high resolution over a range of materials. This technique is the gold-standard for assessing bone morphology in rodents. The advantages of using microCT are: 1) direct 3D measurement of trabecular microarchitecture and cortical morphology [see the two images on the left], 2) compared with histology, microCT enables imaging and analysis of a larger volume of interest, 3) rapid assessment of bone histomorphometric parameters, and 4) scanning is nondestructive, thus samples can be used subsequently for other assays, such as histology or mechanical testing.

In addition to the new scanner, the SBB Core is excited to announce that it will start using the web-based iLabs platform to streamline project consultations and billing for microCT services. All users are invited to use iLabs, which requires a one-time registration or sign in with your UCSF credentials. Once logged in, navigate to the iLab SBB Core page. iLabs will enable you to place service requests, provide required approvals, and monitor progress.

Please contact, Mohamed Habib, Skeletal Biology and Biomechanics Core manager for more information on these services. To learn about other SBB services and contacts, visit our website.
Application Deadline: May 1, 2024 by 5:00pm PST
The MSK T32 program is seeking applications for its next class of fellows who are eager to push the boundaries of MSK science, and in doing so, advance the field in fundamental ways. One-year training slots are available on a competitive basis to trainees proposing research in any area of musculoskeletal science, for projects across all UCSF campuses.

Applications may be submitted by email to Aaron Fields no later than 5:00 p.m. PST, on May 1, 2024. Early submission is encouraged. Awardees will be notified in late May 2024, and must start their fellowship before July 1, 2024.
Eligibility and application requirements can be found in the RFA here.
Three Awards Left - Apply Today!
The Grant Development Award provides funding for a junior CCMBM member to host a meeting (e.g., lunch or dinner) with 1-3 UCSF faculty members who are outside of the trainee’s current lab to:

More often than not, biological experiments involve repeated measures. Examples include responses measured in cellular assays, where the repeated measures may occur over multiple experimental batches, multiple plates, or multiple wells within a plate. Standard statistical tests like t-tests and ANOVA are not applicable. Instead, analysis of such data requires more sophisticated approaches, such as Linear MixedEffect Modeling. In this course, you will learn the motivation for the use of these models, the underlying description and assumptions behind them, example scenarios where they can be used, and code to implement and interpret these models in R.
