TEXAS SPECIAL ISSUE

Each year, we produce a special issue whose exclusive focus is the Lone Star State.

Like its predecessors, this year’s edition features page after page of standout stories. Some, such as Henry Chappell’s profile of Joseph Fitzsimons, inspire. Others, in particular, Lisa Martin’s reporting on the horrific wildfires that scourged the Panhandle, give pause. Their fury and destruction are beyond any of our comprehension.

I wish there had been no need for my in-depth look at the largest condemnation award in Texas history. But Fairfield Lake State Park was not purchased by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, and Todd Interests was not allowed to purchase the $110 million uncontested.

Judge for yourself!
